New Vrs Owner - Engine And Boost Characteristics

Featured Replies

Hi

I recently bought an unmodified 2003 Octavia Vrs MK1 - very pleased with it but having never owned a turbo car before wondered what I should be expecting in terms of where the power/torque lies within the rev range.

Questions:

1) Does anyone know at what revs the turbo starts to boost and does that boost eventually tail off? When driving it seems that the biggest kick is somehwere around 2500 but once you are around 4000 and above the kick is largely over although stil pulls ok.

2) Does the boost presure contiune to increase the higher the engine revs?

3) Can you "confuse" the engine/turbo if you slowly accelerate, or back off and then accelerate rather than just putting your foot down from low revs?

I don't believe I have any problems with the car - I just may be expecting too much from this magaical thing called a Turbo!

Would appreciate people's thoughts/experiences.

Cheers!

Turbo usually starts to boost 1800rpm and as you say gives a bigger kick higher up about 2500rpm.

The turbo thats fitted, a ko3s is on the small side and cant hold its boost thru the entire rev range and begins to tail off

A completely standard car running on a factory map should feel very linear in its power delivery after the initial "kick" when the turbo comes on song.

As above, boost builds up quite quickly from 1800rpm as it is a small turbo and then from 2500rpm onwards, the factory map holds the boost at around 0.6/0.7 bar and turns the torque curve into a fairly straight horizontal line, i.e. the power climbs in a linear fashion, with no further jumps higher up the revs. Makes for swift but dull progress on the road as long as you have a healthy car.

If you have a weak actuator, your N75 duty cycle will increase to the point where the requested boost is not met and torque and power drop off at high revs. There's no real magic going on with a standard map. It's when you start changing stuff and have magic applied to the mapping that the fun really starts!

I should update to say that my vague question 3 was because I needed to clean the throttle body. Much smoother afterwards. I've also remapped since then and much more fun!

Glad you're enjoying it, cleaning the throttle body is one of the best bang for your buck improvements you can make if it's not been done for a while.
