Intermittent, Brief Loss Of Power - 2.0Pd

Featured Replies

For the past 18 months I have had an intermittent problem with a brief loss of power when driving my 2005 Octavia 2.0 PD.

Happens between once to a few times on a 40 minute drive every day.

It only lasts for half a second and feels like a stall but then picks up straight away.

It’s been slowly getting more frequent. It used to only happen in the winter and then just once in the morning and not on the drive back in the evening, but now it can be anytime.

The only things I notice at the time are the glow plug light coming on for a second, sometimes/mostly accompanied by the EMS light, but also a tick, tick sound from the driver’s side dash area, around half a second apart.

The tick is the same sound you get when switching on the rear window heater so maybe a relay?

I don’t know whether this is causing the loss of power or is just a symptom.

Does anyone have any ideas before I start giving lots of money away for fault finding

is it a glow plug problem? Or a clogged fuel filter? Don't know, i'm clutching at straws.

It's continued past a fuel filter change. Not sure about the glow plugs.

I had the error codes read which listed some errors for the glow plugs but the guy was dismissive of that being the problem saying it was quite common for those to pop up.

Had a new one this morning. The power loss lasted for a second or so for the first time but it wasn't a complete loss of power. I was accelerating quite hard but then just maintaining speed with no acceleration.

Don't think so. This is very brief blips of power loss apart from the one longer instance described above.

Sounds like it could possibly be trying to start a passive regen of the dpf if fitted ? Does it use a lot more fuel at these times, which again would lead me to think passive regen.

Try getting it scanned with VCDS and post up the codes.

No DPF fitted. Will work on getting the error codes.
