ticking noise please help

Featured Replies

Hi all

I thought I solved this problem by doing up a loose exhaust bolt top of downpipe but turns out it was not that. This noise starts straight away and continues when warm maybe gets a little quieter. I have done 2 oil changes and even tried Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter fluid. Here is a link if anybody can give advise. Sorry about poor video but you can hear noise is more tinny when i put phone down back of engine.

Also noise appears louder if you put head by front wheel which also makes me think its coming from back of engine. Car boost fine and drives spot on but do get a whine when boost starts sounds like its from driver side more than induction kit or recirc valve

car has 147,000 miles

water pump, timing belt ect done roughly 10,000 miles ago

Difficult to tell from the video, but it's not a leaky manifold to turbo gasket is it? I had one of those and it made the typical "farting" noise that an exhaust leak makes. Yours sounds more "knocky", but it might be the mic changing the sound.

Next question is if it is tappets is it worth fixing as its deffo back of engine so i know which tappets it will be and best mate is mechanic who will do it over a weekend at his house for cash in hand. Or is it best to get rid of car or drive till it stops altogether. Trouble is really love the car and heart was set on always keeping her for as long as possible..... cant break car cos nowhere to keep it if off the road. So please advise

1- fix

2- try sell

3-keep driving for as long as she goes

Get the tappets swapped mate and keep it :)

Its not making noises at that area its more rear centre around the 3rd spark plug area

My engine did the same after an oil changed that turned out to be fake Castrol...

Only solution was replacing all 20 tappets and another oil change. Problem stopped since then. You can't really tell which one of the 20 tappets is broken, so the solution is to replace all of them. Easy job, worth doing.

You will also need another gasket for the top engine cover. It's quite cheap so get the best you can find.

Here is a video of mine...

Do you roughly remember how much it all cost. Did you do it yourself. As mentioned my mate can do it just not sure when but wont be before christmas. How long did it take?

Well i live in Romania so all 20 tappets were about 100 pounds. You also need the gasket i told you about which is a few pounds. Add the labour on top of those and you'll have the cost.

I did not do it alone, camshaft must be taken off in order to access them, better take it to a service station. The operation took a few hours.

Sounds like a blowing gasket to me
