My take on winter wheels...

Featured Replies

So, with a garage bulging with Skoda related tat and nonsense, what better to add to the pile of Summer wheels, and trackday wheels than another pile, of a distinctly wintery flavour.

I had ended up with a collection of 4 x 16" genuine Fabia vRS steel spare wheels over the last 12 months, so I sent them into City Powder coaters in Birmingham to be blasted and powder coated Gloss Black, to be fitted with a set of new 205 45 16 Winter tyres.

Sat at work, thinking as you do, about some sort of wheel trim, managed to buy a grubby OE Skoda Superb Classic wheel trim, but the offset on the superb wheel is different to the Fabia and it wouldn't fit, so I dredged through some old pics of a mate of mines VW Bora SE which had 16" steels when it was new...

These to be exact....

Some more eBay snipering saw a set of Mint genuine Bora trims in the garage, but obviously the VW badge is a bit of a give away... so looked at some different options for the badge, ie sticker or painting... both would look Gash, so I found a set of 90mm domed Skoda Alloy badges in Bulgaria of all places, they arrived quick and soon replaced the VW tat and now looked like OE skoda trims!

Fitted them today, gave the old tub a bit of a wash...

Bit marmite with my mates, but look a bit better than just gloss black steelies..

Awaits the flaming!!!!

Matt

No flaming from me, I've run the past 2 winters with the same setup (but with VW logo). I like what you have done with the skoda badges.

I took a different approach (on my Mk2 Golf).  I decided to get some winter tyres, more as an experiment than a necessity, so I didn't want to spend too much.  Had a single manky 14" steel wheel at the bottom of the garden, leaning against the outside of a shed.

Acquired three more, for nothing, one matching this one in similar condition, another pair that were in better nick, but not quite the same as the first two.

Bought some rattle-can primer, matt black paint, and plenty of wire-brushy bits and wet'n'dry...

Started to clean up the wheels, but quickly realised that I really didn't give much of a damn at all what they looked like.  So the rattle cans are still full, the wheels fitted with nice new winter tyres, and as of today, on the car.  Job jobbed. :D

I won't offend you all with pictures...

Looks good

I prefur Skoda superb wheel trims.

I actually quite like the bare steel wheels. They have a certain honesty about them.

Your solution certainly keeps the centre of the hub out of the weather.

Winter wheels!!!!! FFS the car hardly leaves your drive in the summer never mind winter!! :p
