Dodgy front passenger speakers...

Featured Replies

Well, I haven't had to post much at all about my 04 Fabia vRS for ages cause it's been going fine, gathering stone chips and general wear and abuse in its stride (!), but now with 34k miles on the clock a problem, the left hand front speakers (both tweeter and bass) appear to intermittently stop working for a while. Sometimes there is a bit of a crackle.

Any known thing to check before Mr Dealer gets to pull the door card etc apart to fix it - I assume a broken cable?

Yes the balance control is set to centre! :)

Ta for any help...

Does the volume level affect it? It does sound like an odd problem it just being intermittent. When it is working, does it sound fairly clear and crisp?

Could be the start of an element of your radio packing up. Its the only thing which I can think of to cause an intermittent problem like you say. (I always blame the amp lol)

I would think it's broken wires. Crackling and imtermittently working makes me think thats the problem. I just wouldn't expect it from such a new car. I had this problem on my old cavalier but that had 130,000 miles on the clock and was 12years old. The wires snapped from fatigue inside the insulation where they went from the pillar into the door.

I would say you are more likely to have a dry joint at one of the ends, probably the speaker end. It must get disturbed by vibration when the door is opened and closed or when driving down uneven road surfaces, hence the crackling.

I had the same problem in my Superb, in fact it has returned since it was 'fixed' the first time. When the speaker cuts out if you tap it or the surrounding door trim does it come back on? (maybe more than a 'tap' required!)

It was a dodgy connection inside the speaker itself on mine, they initialy put a new connector on the end of the wire which seemed to work fine but it must have just been where they disturbed the speaker, they have ordered a new speaker now as apparently the loose connection is internal to the speaker!

Well finally got around to experimenting with this problem today as it wasn't raining and not at work :) Lo and behold with the door open wiggle the rubber cover over the wiring to the door and the speaker cuts in and out....

The connector at the a pillar probably just needs clipping in.
