Whats the little mountain icon for on my sat nav?

Featured Replies

Good evening

On my ombudsman or whatever the sat nav is, there is a little mountain icon with a value displayed in yards. Anyone know what it is ?

The height you are at.

Altitude.

Can the O3 detect Maaaaaaaarijuaaaaaaanaaaaaaaaa ?

SOLVED !!! this proves two things 1. this forum rocks 2. I am stupid!

Many sat-navs seem to display height as metres or yards (rather than in feet).

You can configure for metric, but it can't cope with distances in miles and altitude in metres, which is annoyingly what I relate to...

Now the fun question- What is the height referring to? Height above what?

Generally the height above sea level..

How far this has gone over your head ;)

Whilst its Ok to know until you reach 2,400m who actually cares ?

But what is sea level? It always changes with tide for example.

Why 2,400m? What happens at 2,400m?

Altitude sickness apparently

The GPS receiver uses a theoretical sea level estimated by a World Geodetic System (WGS84) ellipsoid. So the tide can be in or out and it won't make the slightest difference.

Makes sure you have some Viagra with you if you go above 2400m....  supposedly it helps alleviate the effects. Just make sure you swallow it properly! ;)

Does it make any difference if you have lowered suspension?

Yes...........

But beware, it's accuracy seems to vary. My house seems to be anywhere between 90 & 107 feet above sea level.

Perhaps 'cos it doesn't always see the same number of satellites?

Is what I was looking for. Im guessing the datum they refer to is chart datum, or ordnance datum.

I was seeing how many people would be scratching their heads :D
