1) IIRC the DSG box will have troublw with the diesels extra torque output, but this can be turned down to compensate.

2) because of how automatics operate means they consume more power, so the car uses more fuel (although it's not as much as they used to). Also if you looked at the 1.9 and not the 2.0, the 1.9 in manual is only Euro3, whereas the Auto is Euro4 so that may have something to do with it too.

Not if it's a 2.0TDI. The 2 litre is already on the torque limit for the DSG I think. There might be a little bit of leeway with the 1.9.

As noted above, I think it's because the DSG box is slightly heavier than the standard box. Also, I've noticed that it seems to slip the clutch more when pulling away than I would do (if I had a full manual box).

However, in the real world, I suspect that there isn't going to be very much difference. It is all going to depend on how heavy your right boot is.

Over the past few weeks I've been trying to compare the difference in consumption on my daily commute and, to be honest, the lowest consumption comes from letting the car decide -- i.e. stick it in drive, cruise control whenever possible.

Mind you, it seems to p*ss other drivers off when I drive at a steady 30mph in built up areas. But then they drive Audis and VWs anyway, so what do I care?

It's the torque that's the issue. If you look at the 2.0TDI torque figure, I believe it's identical to the TT 3.2 torque figure in standard trim. Therefore if you remap it you'll have excess torque and risk damaging the gearbox....

Didn't look at the actual figures but fair enough. Looks like I made the right dicision with the 6 speed manual then as i'd consider a re-map if a good one became available for the 2.0 TDi.

The map for the 170bhp version would do the job you'd think but there are rumours of it having a bigger turbo too so might be a recipe for disaster.

It's all about tourque. The 2.0 TDI 140 bhp has 320 NM of torque. The DSG box is rated at 350 NM of torque max. (The amount of torque found in the 170 bhp version of the 2.0 TDI, featured on the new passat)

Talking to AMD and Jabba, there are ways of capping the torque and have a rather flat torque curve, but this is hard to accomplish. AMD has mapped a few cars with DSG boxes and they think that going less than 5% over the torque limit is not going to damage the box. This of course is debateable.

Edit: this means that you can safely remap to around 170 bhp for the 140 bhp version of the 2.0 TDI without going over the limit of the DSG box

As for the 170 bhp version, if you follow the rule of not going above 5% over the torque limit, you can theoretically (spelling) go to around 230 bhp, but I think that other components might give in before that.

I tend to think that under 5% over the limit won't have anything to say. All components have a safety buffer.

I'll get flak here but it came down to a 1.9 with DSG or a 2.0 without. I'd have kicked myself for getting a 1.9, I know I would. As SWMBO is pregnant again i'm glad I didn't push to DSG in the 2.0. As it stands my company will be paying the insurance and meeting all but

Good point. Hadn't thought of the warranty issue. My car will be a year out of warranty when I change it. Big big bills associated with repairing a DSG i'd imagine or even just doing a clutch change.

What is the Soda warranty situation with DSG clutches?

IIRC Audi gives a lifetime warranty on them for the TT3.2 V6 and that has launch control which you might think would hammer at least one of the clutches. Maybe the electronic control is precise enough for it not to be an issue. The only proviso seemed to be adhering to the DSG oil/fluid and filter change schedule(s).

Dunno about other Audi models with DSG but it would be odd if the same warranty did not apply.
