Dash cam for Yeti ?

Featured Replies

Hi  All

I am thinking of buying a 'Nextbase' 402g Dash  from Halfords,  'Which' have given the model a very good review.

The Cigar lighter fitting has currant on all of the time, it is not switched.

So it looks if I may have to wire it into the right hand fuse panel, using a piggy back fuse connecter.

I would appreciate any comments on the type of dash cam and the best way to wire up the unit please.

It's quite easy.

The best way is to go to the fusebox and plug the camera into an ignition live using a piggyback fuse holder.

The fusebox is on the driver (right) side of the fusebox, so you can go along the rooflining, down the A post and straight in.

If you do a search on here, you'll find a guide or two.

I think someone did a Yeti specific one.

This is the piggyback fuse holder.

Thanks Richard.

Hmm, that looks expensive for what it is.  You can get dashcams with exactly the same feature set for less than half that price.  TBH I wouldn't rely on Which? for best buy advice on tech stuff, and I certainly wouldn't buy it from Halfruads.

Have a look at http://www.techmoan.com for useful, informative reviews of various dashcam models.  The author usually posts original video footage from each dashcam he reviews, as well as his YouTube video blogs (on which the video is compromised by YT's compression), so you can get a proper idea of the actual picture quality you will get.  Also useful is https://dashcamtalk.com/, especially the dedicated forums for each model which contain lots of useful information and tips.

FWIW I have a Mini 0801 with the GPS mount, mounted behind the rear view mirror in my Yeti and powered via a piggyback fuse holder.  A 32GB mincroSD card gives me about 5 hours of full HD recording.  I bought it from Amazon, using a "fulfilled by Amazon" merchant to minimise any potential issues if I needed to return it.  (Buying direct from the Chinese vendors eg via eBay or the recently-floated Alibaba.com usually means extended delivery times and, should a problem arise, a baroque returns process that seems designed specifically so as to dissuade you from embarking upon it.)  Somewhere at home I have footage of a BMW performing a very poorly-judged overtake on the A701 which forced me to brake from ~60mph to below 40mph (as captured by the GPS log) in order to avoid a head-on collision.  I am now considering installing a lower-resolution camera at the rear, possibly with something to make it reasonably obvious that it's there, as a deterrent to tailgaters.

Bear in mind when installing a dashcam such having the screen 'live' and visible from the driver's seat while driving could be distraction, and might be frowned upon by the polis in the event of an incident.  Ignore the stuff in the Bextbase blurb about the size of the screen: all you really need a screen for is to configure the device, and to aim it during installation.  To get any useful evidence from the video you really need to upload it to a computer, or at least a tablet.

BTW, the "parking mode" listed in the description of the Nextbase device would require power to the camera when the vehicle is parked.  It probably wouldn't work very well, either.  A lot of the budget models (which the Nextbase is, although the Halfords price is inflated) claim to have such a feature but it's nowhere near as good as the more sophisticated parking mode in devices like the Blackvue, which have features like continuous buffering so that when the motion detection or g-sensor is triggered it captures a few seconds of video from before the triggering event as well - ie you get the idiot reversing towards you as well as driving away at speed after hitting you and without leaving any details.  The value of "parking mode" for a forward-facing camera is debatable anyway: a much greater proportion of incidents occurring while stationary involve people or vehicles approaching from the side or rear.  Even a near-180-degree-view front-facing camera won't capture anything happening further back than the A pillar.

Read this thread. Read what I could find from search. Seems a great idea as some comic just side swiped my wife's car (NOT the Yeti thank goodness) when she was parked on her own side with the handbrake on. Said guilty party then started shouting & cursing.........aint some of the "human" :@  race wonderful? :x  :x  :x

So I like the idea BUT my knowledge of wiring and electrics is slightly below nil SO (sorry if this is a hijack  ) anyone know of such a device that would give reasonable hour or two from a battery? Replaceable or chargeable.

There are a few, but do you really want to be removing, charging and fitting a battery between trips?

Probably better to get an auto-electrician to fit a dash cam, takes less than an hour.

Yes especially if they can get their hands on a Blackvue Smart Power or whatever it is. Got one in the Clio with the two 300s, it's brilliant. Never had any issues even with car left recording for days

On the mk2 octy there's a small cubbyhole on the right of the steering wheel next to the fusebox and I followed Fubar's guide and used one of these so if you have something similar in the Yeti you won't have to cut the lead for what ever dashcam you use - it even has the usb port which operates at a lower voltage, so if your dashcam clmes with a power lead that has a usb connector don't wire it direct to 12v or you'll fry it. The wire that goes to the centre connector goes to the fuse, the outer one to earth. HTH

Poundland do one.

Which is, surprisingly, exactly one pound.

A socket thing - not a dash cam.

I run both my mini 0801's using a 5metre usb lead that I run round the windscreen headlining/dash to a usb car charger.

The camera switches on when its plugged in and can be safely left plugged in when parked etc.

Just got to watch that it doesn't flatten the battery if left plugged in for extended lengths though not had any problems as yet here.

Thanks guys I'll have a ponder on it. Sorry for the delay. Internet access out in the sticks is C**P :x

I have the Nextbase 420g which was originally in my Yeti and now in my Qashqai, it is a very reliable product, high quality images and records all your journeys, speed etc. flawlessly. It might sound expensive but with the features it has is good value. I have also noticed from owners on the Qashqai forums very few of the dash cams pick up a GPS signal with the heated front windscreen, but the 420g has no issues with this

The only one I recommend for my customers is the Mobius. They're well priced with good quality day and night, you can get all the parts as individual spares and I also use the supercapacitor conversion kit to increase their already good reliability.

I wouldn't touch Blackvues anymore. Overpriced and flawed by design (clock battery soldered to the board and the main one has a timer chip instead of charging circuit leading to overheating, swelling and premature death).

I have had the NextBase 402G for almost a year and am belighted with it. It is hard wired into the rear wiper fuse and the cable run is easy to do without removing trim. The software is excellent too and works well with my iMac. I have a 32Gb micro SD card installed which will record up to 5 hours and the camera then overwrites the oldest files. I have it set to record in 3 minute sections; easy to locate the file you want to review. I purchased mine from Amazon for £149. I used a piggy back fuse holder and cigar lighter type socket inside the fuse box. Image quality is superb and the GPS reception is very reliable.
