Is my turbo working properly?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I bought my monte carlo about 2-3 months ago (63 plate) and during the first month of driving it i could hear the turbo hissing/sucking noise when i accelerate but now i can't hear that sound anymore and all i can hear is the engine revving..car feels and pulls the same just without the sound..could it be due to the air filter? It looked clean the other day? Or am i just being paranoid?

Thanks

Anyone..??

Is it because the weather has changed and the car is run in now?

If the car is going OK, then that sounds fine.

Or have you maybe been losing your hearing.?   Not working for a Car Dealership are you,  they are often deaf that do work there.

I'd say you'd know if the turbo wasn't working. Were the windows open then?

I dunno is it because the car is run in? It's done 4500 miles but i thought the turbo always made that noise regardless of age or mileage? And no i'm not going deaf hahahha

No windows were closed

Its only a low pressure turbo, no massive great boost machine.

Most turbos I've driven i can hear a slight whistle sometimes but i cant others.

I dont think its anything to worry about tbf.

Or maybe its upset cos youve been contemplating hids for ages, but havent bitten the bullet yet? ;) haha. :)

Slight whistle perhaps, other sounds might indicate a boost leak which is not a good thing. But most likely it's absolutely fine. Even in the VRS, the turbo is mostly inaudible despite it producing a fair bit of pressure.

Maybe i'm expecting too much sound from it lol i do want more sound but i guess i'll have to buy a performance air filter (not getting an intake system). And actually i ordered some tonight from hids direct so they're a present for me from the mrs so gunna have to wait until xmas..unless i persuade her to give them early ;)

Aslong as it feels okay and pulls okay, isnt making extra noises etc etc, i should think itll be fine :).

Ooo happy days! Feel free to pop me a pm if youve got any questions about em (:

Yeah i think i'm just getting paranoid for no reason and okay mate will do, thanks, haven't got a clue how to fit it but gunna give it a go first and see how i get on

Not saying it is this but I used to have an astra that when I accelerated made a hissing/whistling sound. Turned out the head gasket had gone.

Love it,

But not sure if he wants his Turbo hissing /sucking noise back that it had when new,

so that it can sound like an Astra with a head gasket gone.

To be on the safe side I'd have a new turbo fitted like this one.

Turbo

I've never been able to hear any turbo whistle and I've had mine since new, are you sure you weren't behind a Scooby Impreza!

Haha i was probably hearing things, i'm sure it's fine

Yeah, I think if there was something wrong with the turbo you'd know about, it would start driving like the 1.2 HTP!!!

It sounds good atm. I just wanted a bit of extra noise but without getting an induction kit, was looking at the straight replacement Pipercross performance air filter for £60, is that any good/worth it?

I'm not the best person to ask for advice on this front, plenty of threads on here about filters, induction kits and dump valves.

There's a guy called Jay Mitchell who's done quite a bit to his Monte, he'll be the best to ask but he doesn't seem to have been on for a while.

Oh okay, no worries cheers anyway

Check out the Red Fabia picture post as Jay had just put some pics on and one of them shows his engine bay with a performance filter in place.

Will do, thanks

Having been in a 115bhp engine with a buggered turbo, youd be envious if the HTP's performance aha.

The slightest hill would pretty much stop it. Oh and it was abit smokey too haha.
