Red warning light

Featured Replies

I've got an intermittent problem that's started since it started getting colder.

A warning light appears on a cold start (with accompanying warning chime). It's the top left one here, looks like a thermometer in some wavy lines:

If I turn the ignition off and back on again it clears and I don't see it again. Stat seems fine, gets to and holds a steady 90 quite happily and coolant level looks fine as well so I'm a little bit lost here - any suggestions or is it just a dodgy sensor somewhere that doesn't like a frost? I've also noticed the climatronic is a little noisy on first start but don't know if that's related.

That's the low coolant light. Might be a faulty sensor?

A Seat I had used to warn me that it is cold, like I wouldn't know, could be the same thing.  I think it was set to warn of temperature drops below 4 degrees, and would warn on start up to basically say take it easy because the coolant is very cold.  My VRS hasn't done it though, maybe it can be switched on in VCDS?  My trip display does tell me the temp whenever it goes below 4 outside though so there could be something in the warning systems related to it.  Like yourself I thought the Seat was telling me my coolant was low, so I kept checking and it was fine, ran fine, steady temps etc.  Is there anything in the user manual?

Maybe my Seat had a dodgy sensor lol, there was something in that user manual about it being a cold conditions warning though I'm sure

Header tank sensor probably covered in crud.

I wouldn't imagine they would use the low coolant light as a warning of cold outside temps that's what the one in the MFD is for.

Thanks guys. I too get the cold warning on the MFD as well so I'm leaning more towards a sensor. pauldazzle, is this something I can easily check and clean or is it going to be a swap out?

I think you can give it a gentle scrub with a toothbrush insitu in the first instance?

Yeah, try a toothbrush. A new header tank with the sensor is only about a £10.00

Yep - if you can see the "prongs" you can clean them and the issue will go away (for a year in mine). I used a screwdriver blade to gently scrape up and down the prongs. Never thought of using a toothbush.

Mind, the wife wasnt happy when i cleaned the wheels with hers......
