Columbus fault

Featured Replies

The Columbus unit in my 2010 Yeti periodically produces most annoying low volume screeching feedback type of noise through the speakers whether or not it is switched on.

Adjusting the volume has no effect on the noise, and sometimes the CD player sounds as though it's looking for a disc, even when there isn't one inserted.

It's easy to drown out the noise simply by turning up the volume which is fine whilst driving, but when parked, the flippin' thing is so annoying.

You can hear the noise from outside the car even after you lock it, but it seems to stop when the unit goes back to sleep after a few minutes.

The problem seems to be more likely to occur first thing in the morning when the weather is very cold, and sometimes goes away once the unit is well warmed through - though not always.

A soft reset sometimes cures it, but again, not always.

Any ideas?

If you hadn't said the noise is coming out of the speakers then I'd say it sounds like it may be the fan on the rear of the unit which is squealing. But as it's noise from the speakers then maybe look elsewhere. Do you have anything else connected to the unit at all, like an MDI unit, or a bluetooth kit? If so, try disconnecting those and see if the fault is being generated by that.

After that it sounds like it might be the power supply block in the rear (where the Quadlock unit plugs in) which is also the outlet amplifier section.

But I've not had a fault like this before.

Thanks for your thoughts.

There's no MDI on the car, and the Bluetooth is the one fitted to the car as standard when it was new.

It's definitely an electronic interference fault, I can best describe it as a series of varying sounds akin to the sort of dull pops, bangs and whistles that used to be common on your home TV or hi-fi from a badly adjusted taxi radio
