VRS, a few questions

Featured Replies

It was time for a change so I traded in my 2009 corsa vxr for a 2014 fabia vrs.

Lovely car in many respects, absolutely in love with the dsg box.

Just a few things I have noticed I am not entirely sure about.

Firstly, the car only has 3k on the clock so the engine it's barely worn in yet.

MPG - I have been really surprised/ disappointed with this so far. The type of car it is, of course I don't expect massive figures and I didn't buy it for that reason. However, my vxr which was tuned to 240 bhp gave me 32mpg average. Complete mix of town driving/ motorway with country blasts thrown in. All in all though I'm fairly reserved with the throttle peddle.

The vrs seems so be struggling to get more than 29mpg. And honestly, I have barely been putting my foot down! Is this right?

Secondly, when you have the Windows down I have noticed a slight mechanical clunk on the dsg when it's changing in low gears only (1st, 2nd and 3rd). I have never had an auto before let alone a dsg so not sure if this is normal??

Overall though, really happy with it. Pic below.

Welcome to the forum.

29mpg might well be expected starting from cold, in short journeys, and when driving in a spirited manner.

If you Zero the Maxi Dot settings, what MPG can you get on a run of say 40-50 miles at National Speed Limits,

60 or 70 mph?

Anything over 20 miles covered is likely to be getting you at least 35mpg & more like 40 mpg plus when driving in a normal manner.

But reset the 'Consumption' & Average, and you have settings '1' and '2', to reset or store.

Are you running it on Super Unleaded, 97 ron or 99 ron?

The Recommended Petrol is Super Unleaded 98 ron or higher.

1st to 2nd is at between 5-10 mph,

you had best keep an eye on the Noise, it really should not be there.

There can be cars with a noise that people describe as going over a Cattle Grid.

Do not accept that as 'Normal', if that is what a Skoda Technician tells you it is.

Your car really is not run in at 3,000 miles if it was a Demonstrator,

& if it has been run for 3,000 miles on 95 Ron Unleaded i would start using 99 ron.

The DSG will learn your driving style.

Cars used by others often feel different until they settle down again.

?

Have you set / checked the Tyre Pressures & reset the TPMS,

they can be at anything as they leave a dealership,

too soft or too hard or mixed and not matched.

PS

Best dip your Oil Stone Cold to know where that shows as the Dealership supplied the car.

Then do a Hot Dip and familiarize yourself where that level shows,

then you know for the future where to expect the oil to show, with a cold dip before a long journey and with a Hot Check.

Or after a Service is carried out.

That is always assuming the car was not over filled at the Service Check before they Handed the car over.

(Some Ex Demonstrators are over topped up with Oil. because the person doing it might have been an Employee driving

the car, and not familiar with how to do it, or check.)

Some great advice there.

I have the dsg gear selection noise, normally when cold but hardly noticeable and it sounds like a positive mechanical selection so not something I've ever worried about, mpg sounds about right from what I get from mine as an average from mixture of short trips with odd long 200-300 round trip chucked in now an then, as mentioned above on a longer trip at national speed limits you will likely see between mid thirties and mid forties maybe higher if you are well restrained on the loud pedal and my mpg seemed to be getting slightly better as the miles go on, now just over 8k, it was awful when new. Seconded on the fuel as well, shell nitro or Tesco momentum 99.

Drive it hard and enjoy it and nice colour combo!!!

It will improve with miles, u need about 10k to be totally run in, 3k will still be tight! I think George said this (scanned his posts) but if u zero the fuel after it's warm it will give u a better representation, make sure it's on 'trip 1' and not 'trip 2' as that's total from new .... Use super, dealer will have used 95, and u can often hear a bit if mechanical noise , it is 2 automated manuals mated together after all ;)

Enjoy your car!

On 'Trip 2' just zero that if you want pressing the Reset.

Thanks for the replies all. Will keep an eye on the mpg! Having listened to it a bit more I think the noise I was talking about is normal. Just a slight clunk in the gear selection when cold. However, I have now noticed a new noise having had a few fun journeys with the car. The noise, I guess could be described as cattle grid (kind of). It's a fast repetitive tapping sound and only occurs when holding the gear coming down from the top of the rev range. So noticeable in sport and manual when you put your foot down to probably any thing above 4-5k rpm and let hold the gear and let the revs drop. I can only hear it with the Windows down but it's very noticeable. I have searched the forum for anything similar but I'm struggling to find any posts.

Can anyone she'd light on this?

And happy new year everyone!

Plenty of posts on Manual, & 'S' , and those that often never use 'S' for hard acceleration or to get a move on,

maybe thats where you are getting the noises.

You have '7' speed in 'D' & '6' Speed in 'S'.

Have you looked at how the Engine operates, ?

Supercharger to 3,500 rpm,

Turbo on Demand with Supercharger until 3,500 rpm, then only Turbo, or Supercharger on Demand with Turbo again.

Lots of reason for various noises that are perfectly acceptable.

This is the less powerful 125kw version, but you have the same thing with the 132-136kw 1.4TSI /TFSI

keep your windows shut ;)

On a recent 350 mile mostly motorway journey I averaged about 40 MPG.

Over 9,500 miles I have averaged 39.3 MPG - like you, a mix of city and motorway driving - always with the DSG set to "D".

I very very rarely exceed the speed limit and don't go in for wild acceleration except when overtaking.

I almost always use 97 RON fuel and have never felt that 99 RON (Shell or Tesco) made any discernable difference except to my bank balance.

I base my MPG figure on litres into the tank and miles covered, not the MaxiDot.

A lovely car - the Twincharger engine is great - the DSG box is even better - it's a pity about the ride and the noise.

Which 97 ron do you buy, and does it cost more than 1 pence a litre less than the Tesco 99 ron?
