DSG - Dual Mass Flywheel Replacement

Featured Replies

Have any of you done a DIY DMF change on a 1.9 TDI with the 6 speed DSG box?

Mine is now starting to rattle and weighing up my options at this stage.

I'd leave it for now.

Mine has been rattling for 30,000 miles now with no other symptoms or worsening of the rattle. I just keep an eye (or ear) on it!

Agree... DMF might make a rattle sound for very long time without any damage!  :S  So better leave how it is.When things goes  worst, for instance start vibrate then change it.

That is not easy job, of course that depends of your 'tool box' size and skills  :hi:

...........I did have a dig around the web a few years ago when mine first started rattling, to see if it would be feasible to DIY it.

I found this video on Youtube of a guy doing it on a VW Jetta https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35jzCS6MOds The Octavia would be pretty much identical.

I have done a few big jobs in my time, but I'm not sure I'd tackle this.....even though in some ways it would be easier than doing it on a manual box.....no clutch to replace on the DSG as they are inside the transmission. But the 6 speed DSG weighs around 70kg, so I reckoned at the very least I'd have to get hold of a transmission jack and probably an impact gun to make the job bearable......even then it would probably take me a whole 12 hour day to do. I think if the time comes I'll pay to get it done.

As already mentioned, it does depend on your skills and access to equipment.......hydraulic ramps, hoists, and a garage full of professional tools would make all the difference.

Part is around £295 incl VAT if you buy from LuK.

Garage Labour was around £300 incl VAT at a reputable independant

I think I'll let it rattle for a while.

Local VAG place is very competitive on labour charges, so will probably end up going to them to fit parts as whilst I'm not against doing DIY where I can, this would be a very involved job and certainly require 2 of us.
