4 x 4 Yeti as a towcar

Featured Replies

This is a great topic and very appropriate for me. We have an Adria Altea 542 DT at 1300kg MPTLM. We also have a 4x4 Yeti Tour de France and was wondering and wondering whether to stick with this or change to something else.

Seems it tows very well! Which is good. Looking forward to getting the Towbar fitted now (27th) - Westfalia Fixed swan with 13pin and dedicated electrics.

One thing though. We can barely see 40mpg out of it solo ( worked out properly) so not looking forward to towing consumption.

I read this topic with interest

We would like to get a 4x4 140 bhp Yeti

we are looking at a couple of Caravans we would like to match it with

One of the vans  a Sprite dealer special 4FB  which has an MTPLM of 1350K

The Yeti should cope with this  just fine.

We may have to opt for this van if weight decides.

The other van that has our interest is a Dealer Special of a Swift Challenger Sport 554

with an MTPLM of 1420 Kg

It ticks all the requirement boxes we have for  a Van

Fully loaded this van is getting close to the Kerb weight of the Yeti .

We have looked at a VW Tiguan which could manage the 554 with easy so may consider the Tiguan

but we like the Yeti as it would suit as more as a solo vehicle as well

The Yeti does have good tow car qualities and one of them is the short distance from the rear axle to the Tow bar making it a stable tow vehicle

We  don't intend loading the Caravan with a lot other than what has to go in it and carry most in the Vehicle

which would bring the weight ratio down so we may be able to use the Yeti with this van by watching the loading carefully

We are going to look at the two van's in a couple of weeks so will have a better idea then

Does any owners of 4x4 Tow a caravan with an MTPLM of 1420kg ?

Does any Yeti 4x4 owner tow a Challenger Sport 554 ?

I would be interested to hear for either of the above

Time for another  :coffee:  and look at the Kerb weights and MTPLM's

Cheers BriJo, that's great thanks, my van is 1430 MTPLM so yours is exactly the kind of answer I'm after. I'm currently towing it with my Octavia L & K est. officially it's around a 98% match, however that is working with the listed kerbweight. Before deciding to buy this van I took the octy to a weigh bridge. It had nothing in it except half a tank of diesel and me I weigh around 13 stone. The listed weight from the calibrated weigh bridge is 1560 KG, that is some 230KG more than listed by Skoda. I have been told that Skoda measure the kerbweights on an ex works dry vehicle, no fuel lubricants etc. So given that I suspect the actual running weight of a yeti would be around the 1600 kg mark.

Sorry for droning on lol

This piece  I found very interesting

you would think that there was an Industry standard for Kerb Weight

so the likes of us could work out what vehicle can tow what caravan or trailer.

I had worked out Skoda don't include the EU 75 kg for a driver but I wasn't aware of the fluids.

If the Yeti weighs in at nearer 1600 kgs thats bringing the ratio down enough for me  :coffee:

Just to expand a bit on my #3 above:

Elddis 524L 1425 Kg MTPLM, Yeti (see sig below) 1555 Kg Kerb (91.6%) 2100 Kg Gross, 2000 Kg Max Tow (quoting from TowSafe report - worth paying for - based on 'experienced' towing driver).

Remember that the Yeti's short tail helps stabilise the tow, but the same feature makes reversing a bit hairy - not much movement in the hitch!
