Diagnosis - light clutch shudder

Featured Replies

HI guys. I'm finally moving my long serving 152,000m 2003 1.9Tdi 90HP ALH engined Octavia on to a friend of my son's, and don't want him to experience unnecessary trouble.

The car is in very good nick, and has apart from the following and some minor stuff been very reliable.

It had a new gearbox and clutch (probably a pattern unit and including a new flywheel) when a new gearbox (the original was an EGL) was fitted at 90,000m - the latter as a result of the classic VW crown wheel failure. A rivet punched through the casing.

The one issue is the above light/soft shudder as it takes up the drive - most wouldn't notice it, and it's not a practical issue. Shudder is probably an exaggeration, probably more a light low frequency vibration. It's the sort of thing i've seen years ago caused by a small amount of oil leaking on to a clutch, or abnormal plate wear. It's been around for about a year, and doesn't seem to be getting any worse.

Slipping the clutch for a moment under heavy throttle in high gear seems to eliminate it for a few days.

The dreaded dual mass flywheel failure came to mind, but listening to a video on YouTube it sounds nothing like that clatter. There is no sound, and it's not a hard/mechanical vibration.

The other recent but minor issue was the bleeding of the clutch - it had become a little sensitive to needing to be fully depressed to the floor to get clean gear changes at times. It's perfect now.

So the million dollar question. Does the above suggest the early stages of anything horrible like the dual mass issue or aomething else, or am i perhaps being overly cautious?

Thanks...

Seems fine.  I will PM the OP
