Amundsen V Columbus

Featured Replies

I am thinking of getting a sat nav for my 2011 fabia . My question is which of the above should I get , pros and cons of each? Does the Amundsen suit the car better , is the columbus screen to big in the fabia? Also has anyone bought one from ebay , was it ok , did you need help fitting? Thanks David.

Can only speak for the columbus. System is good although a little dim witted in places. Fitting is as easy as it gets. I purchased on eBay from a reputable audio seller and had no issues.

Now the bad. Because the columbus runs a higher output than the standard fabia units mixed with the high cabin position of the front tweeters, the treble from them is extremely piercing. I have just had my car in at a local ice dealer to connect to vagcom and see if they could lower the db output, unfortunately with no luck. Some people might like the sound, however its too pitchy for me.

I would highly recommend the kenwood dnx521dab

I've found the Amundsen in mine one of the best sounding standard head units I've had in a car, the door speakers are the only limiting factors.

The sat nav works well and I stream music from my phone via the standard Bluetooth connection and it sounds great too and displays the album and track names on the screen.

The Kenwood would be the best choice but is very expensive compared to a second hand Amundsen or Columbus IMO.

Thanks, do you find the nav as good as say a standard garmin or tom tom.

Thankyou but I think price alone would rule it out.

Yeah, full postcode search but no speed camera warnings and you can have POIs as well.

ok no warnings but does it tell you the speed limit of the road you are traveling on?

Yeah, it does, shows all speed limits, I haven't explored the full features but when I've used it it's been accurate and is quick at finding and setting the routes.

I've not got to the bottom of updates for the Amundsen which look like they are going to work out expensive, not sure if the Garmin in the Kenwood would work out cheaper!

You can go on the Navteq website and put in your VIN number to view available updates, did mine before Xmas but it just said none were available at this time.

Roads don't change that much so not too bothered about map updates anyway but if you do a lot of travelling then it might be important to you.

ok thanks thats helped a lot ,looks like the amundsen maybe the one to go for ,with none of the sound problems of the columbus

I have the Amunsden fitted in my Rapid. It's all great but the speakers in my car are terrible. Let's down an excellent head unit. The 6 speaker set up in my Citigo is excellent so I was greatly disappointed with the Rapid.

How much was the full cost if you don't mind me asking? Unit and fitting...

It was £309.99 plus £19.99 p&p , i fitted myself.

Oh okay not as expensive as i thought. If i was to get it, do you think it would increase the value of the car when it comes to trading it in or selling it?

no not by much at all. think i would remove it and sell separately before trading in .

Question about the nav head units..has anyone ever thought "what if someone tried breaking in and stealing it?". My area isn't that rough but i do park sometimes in rougher areas and was wondering if i buy a sat nav unit then how easy are they to steal? Would it increase the chances of someone breaking into my car?

Thanks

When I was going "option crazy" on the Yeti I have recently ordered, I asked the dealer which nav I should go for. He suggested the Adumsen was faster than the Columbus and I should save some money and go for that.

Re the Kenwood... I looked at it when I had my Tig and discarded it for the following reasons: I felt it might be a target for the villains as it is not a manufacturers part and stands out. I didn't like the removable (part) front. Also the Tig had the Midi System which wouldn't be operative with the Kenwood.. Ok it was suggested to run a cable for a usb into the glove box but I wasn't keen.

Well that's a what if question, an unknown. Its held in by trim and torx screws so it can't be ripped out easily. That's why cars have alarms!

They are actually pretty easy to steal (plenty of info on here for instance on how to remove them!).

The point being though that your car has (or should have) an alarm. So how long would they have to break a window, climb through it, remove the trim, undo the screws, unplug everything and then get away. Also bearing in mind that once the doors are deadlocked there's no way to open them even using the interior handles so they've have to climb through the window etc.

Normally they get stolen from the docks where they are normally left unlocked etc. They break into the compound and do several cars at once.

Car dealers are normally targets too where they break into the building to retrieve the keys then nick the stereos from the cars. It's been know for dealers to remove the Columbus units from cars on the forecourt to avoid this issue.
