Gearbox oil leak

Featured Replies

Back again folks to pick your brains.

How much of an issue (if it is one) is an oil leak from the gearbox (manual, 6 speed). Unsure as to how bad it is but must be enough for the garage to pick up on it and mark it as an action to possibly take. The garage wants about £110 to use the detection spray etc to check it out. What could be the cause/solution? My guess would be that a bolt(s) need tightening up between the crankcase and gearbox casing, but then I'm no expert.

Is it easy to check the gearbox oil level to see if it going through oil? Has anyone had a similar problem? If so what was the cause and was it costly to fix?

Thanks.

Hello what car and what year? Any scraping noises?

Octavia vrs, late 2010/60 plate and no noises.

Sometimes the clutch plate breaks off and rubs through the bell housing causing a leak but you usually hear a scraping noise. Other than that they sometimes leak between the casing . They have sealant and no gaskets.

£110 to tell you where it's coming from sounds as bit high even if they have some magic spray.

Maybe they will fix it with fairy dust!

I successfully fixed a leaky gearbox once after adding a bottle of leak stop and it not working.

The mounting bolts were all retorqued but the leak persisted at the crankcase join. It was a 2nd hand car and the engine had unknown history but had definitely been worked on previously.

Rather than pull things apart I cleaned the area thoroughly with petrol and a piece of scotch brite pan scourer to remove the oil and dirt then used brake cleaner to remove the residue and applied a bead of silicone seal/instant gasket and smoothed it along the join, never lost a drop since.

Don't forget to top up the gearbox oil once you've fixed the leak.
