Wheels!

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Wonder if anyone can put my mind at ease!

I'm looking to PX my Superb for a new Octavia. The Octavia that I'm looking at has 16" wheels as standard but I have spec'd the 18" Golus wheels. The reason for doing so is that I have a spare set of winter tyre shod Themistos which I would like to be able to continue using if I go down the Octavia route. I realise I could simply swap the 16s for the 18s whenever I also think the larger wheel would look better.

The only difference between the 2 types of wheel is that the offset is 46 on the Themisto but 51 on the Golus. If my basic understanding is correct it means the Themistos would project 5mm further out in the wheel arch. Looking at the Octavia in the showroom with 18" wheels on it it looks like 5mm would not be an issue.

Any views?

Dave

they will fit, the PCD (position of the bolt holes) is the same at 5 x 112

they are the same size as a octavia wheel,  the only possible issue is the offset, the octavia wheels are ET51

the spec being          tyre :225/40 R18 92Y  rim:  7 1/2 J x 18  offset: 51

I think the offset on superb wheels is 46, but am possibly wrong, if you look on the back of one of your wheels the ET will be stamped onto it

sorry didnt read tht properly, you have already said that.....

you may put extra stress on bearings and suspension etc, not sure where it becomes frowned on

I am going to run my ET45 wheels on mine, instead of ET46 (on 16") but thats only 1mm.... and is considered OK

My winter wheels are 18x 8 with a 45mm ET and they fit fine.  Some people have added spacers to fill the arches more so there is no issue with space with what you plan to do..

I can confirm that the additional 6mm offset on mine does not seem to affect steering, handling etc (not that I have noticed anyhow)

The offset difference on mine is 3mm (ET48) & I notice no difference at all.

I'm sure 5mm will be absolutely fine.

I'm running my car with a total offset of ET44 on the front and ET41 on the back with my winter wheels as I'm running 12 and 15mm spacers on my ET56 winter Audi wheels. Didn't notice any difference in the way it drives and there is loads of clearance still

I had a test drive in an Octavia VRS and the dealership had fitted Thermistos - they looked really good and no issues as far as I could see.

Hi All

Thanks for all the comments.

Bottom line is that the deal has been done and I've ordered a new 2.0 4x4 SE estate - I couldn't resist putting a few shiny bits on it so it's a factory order with an ETA of end March!

I'll definitely be keeping my spare set of 18" Themistos shod with Avon winter tyres.

Regards

Dave
