Rear spings on 4x4 estate

Featured Replies

Hi All,

just had the rear shocks and springs changed on my 4x4 octy estate as they had both broken, but the car is now lower at the back than before (i didnt want it lowering!!!) so much that i had the lower the headlights last night to stop dazzling people...

I have gone back to the garage (local chaps near to where i work) and they have phoned TPS (parts supplier) and they said that there is only 2 types of spring - STD and Heavy Duty, they used the STD spring... Now, they have offred to get the Heavy Duty ones is and fit them to see what the difference is.

My question - is the heavy Duty Spring longer than STD (this would account for my lack of ride height at present) or is it just the spring rate that is different? or is there something else here, the shocks is used were STD Monroe (they did two types STD and Heavy Duty)

I have checked the build codes printed in the handbook to see if it has HD suspension but can only see a code of L61 (= Suspension range 61 installation control only, no requirement forecast)

Puzzled, but i'm sure somone here will help !!

thanks all!

TPS should know which springs your car needed from the VIN or reg number details. My Octavia II 4x4 has HD suspension and I would have thought yours has too.

Hhhmmm.... OK thanks DGW,  so will my STD dampers work OK with the HD springs?

On my Mk1 estate I replaced the rear springs and the dealer had a surprising number of options listed (various colour codes) not identifiable from VIN no.

If replacing as a pair any of them would have done.

Opted for a pair of them listed for towing. Not expensive as I remember.

Just look at your old spring it will have some paint on eg 2 yellow and 1 orange (just an example) and tell them that.
