in the boot of my octavia are two large rubber straps at the rear of the car , what purpose are these for , is there something that would have been strapped in there thanks

Yep. For the warning triangle if they are in the centre of the car just above the bumper (but inside the boot).

There's where I keep my warning triangle in its plastic case - not in the way and can be reached even if the boot is full of luggage.

Yup, thats where my triangle goes.  It now lives in the spare wheel well of my Megane as the french didn't bother to think of somewhere to put that!  Strange as its a legal requirement to have one over there!

I used to keep a pipe there, I use it as leverage for taking off tyres. The little rubber straps were handy for stopping it rolling around.

 Similar here. Keep a nice long breaker bar with a socket on the end for removing the wheel nuts.
