Dash Cams

Featured Replies

I do have one. One I bought a few years ago in Richard's last group buy but I'd like something more up to date and better quality for the new car. What's out there that's any good at the minute? Has to be full HD and record in quite large chunks. Not interested in crash detection as the one I have is so sensitive it ends up permanently recording in 1 min chunks which is annoying. I don't mind video in sections but the bigger the better.

The Roadhawk HD or Blackvue DR3500FHD?

Mini 0805 is pretty awesome and cracking value.

Mobius is the best I think. Good quality. Good price. Discreet. You can buy any of the spare parts cheaply and you can upgrade it with a super capacitor instead of a battery for better reliability in the heat.

Blackviews are overpriced, poorly designed engineered-to-fail crap.

Got a link? I haven't been that fussed with the Blackview I have. Will be fine for a rear camera though so won't be wasted,

I have personal experience. The clock battery is a tiny button battery soldered to the PCB, so very difficult to replace. The LIPO battery doesn't have a real charging circuit, only a 555 timer chip that stops charging after a set time, regardless of charge level. This is a major factor in why they get so hot and it kills the battery. Wouldn't ever buy one again.

I tried a cheap one (~£30 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IR6G558?psc=1) and although the camera itself worked very well the charger gave out a lot of EM and interfered with the radio. I think that's quite common on the cheaper Chinese no-name cameras since the charger doesn't adhere to any standards.

I've looked again and I was considering one of the Trancend cameras - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-DrivePro-Video-Recorder-Built-In-Black/dp/B00GRYT5QI. I know that particular brand as a memory manufacturer and the reviews seem to be good. Some people moan that it has a sticky mount not a suction mount but that actually suits some cars.

I recently updated from the Roadhawk DC1 to the DC2. Massive improvement in picture quality. Not so good at night. I have an issue with the time stamp, even when I change it it is still an hour out.

I have the Transcend fitted to the rear and it is a much better camera; better picture quality, wider angled lens and although it does not have GPS it does have wifi so you can watch footage back on your phone. I wish I'd installed the Transcend to the front as it is bigger than the Roadhawk and blocks a little of the rear screen.

Unfortunately the cameras have different power fitments so not easily swappable.

If on a budget I'd get the Transcend.

I'd also recommend a minimum of 32gb memory card as each segment is over 100mb.

If you want to see what they are like in action look on the drive recorder thread, it's the one involving the inconveniently parked BT van.
