Mine is too. Could be done, I would suggest cutting off the live cable and insulating it, then run a new feed from the fuse box (use an "add a circuit" from the rear wiper fuse with a 10A fuse) and join this to the cigarette lighter socket

Or put a switch on the line.

I did that, put the switch where the old lighter was and put the lighters (added an extra one - with inline fuses) under the heater controls - can still open the ash tray (not that I use it) using an extra radio din thingy bit I had laying about

oh and they light up when the lights come on, the switch only lights up when on
