Roofbars Newbie

Featured Replies

Hi I have a 200 3 fabia 1.9 ddi hatchback, I know nothing about roof rails and boxes, Im off to France in March for 6 months, we go working every year, this year we have to get all our stuff in this, hence a need for the formentioned, SO what rails do i need, I'm a little lost, my car seems to have slots on the roof for them, if anyone can point me to a cheap set of rails id be most grateful, Boxes, i have a friend who will lend me a box, i have no idea how these attach, any help would be nice.

Thanks in advance of any answers .

Steve

Best thing you can do mate is decide if you want equipment (feet, adaptors, rails and roof box) that will be just good enough or want the best.

If you want equipment that will do the job then head into fraudfords and you can see all the equipment needed on one of those cards.

Personally I would go for Thule, yes you pay more but their range is excellent! Just nip onto their website and they list everything.

Try ebay fella, I got a Thule set for £1 although I had to drive a 90 mile round trip to get them it was still worth it.

How do they fit?

I've seen so many, i don't mind a drive

They fit very well because they're fully adjustable, the support feet clip on and the claws grip the cleats on the roof really tightly, they're not exactly quick release though, takes about 10 mins to take them off and snap the little plastic covers back into the roof trims.

This is how the Thule systems fits. The foot pack attaches to the car with a scissor type mechanism tightened via the black horizontal bolt. The foot pack then attaches to the roof bar via a 'T' track type mechanism, and gets locked into place via the two silver headed bolts you see in the pic.

Depending on what brand and fitting method your friends roof box has got will depend on what sort of roof rail you will have to go for. If your friends roof box is Thule, it will most likely have 'T' track adapters and/or a clamp type adapter which secures around the bar (Thule products usually come with both to be compatible with either Wingbars or Squarebars). If however the roof box includes clamp type fitting method, then you're best off going with a square bar.
