Anyone???

Lumpy idling on these 2.0 BKD engines does seem to be quite a common complaint. Mine always idled slightly lumpy but not enough for me to bother doing anything about it over the years I owned it.

One cause can be the cam timing being very slightly out. It can be checked using VCDS software and looking at the torsion value. I've never adjusted one, but if you Google 'tdi torsion value' it brings up loads of info about it.

nick74: On the BKD engines (DOHC 16V) you can't look at 'torsion value' from VCDS (camshaft sensor/crankshaft sensor) because every single engine is specific and these sensors are not in the same position on all BKD engines. The single correct way how to fix cam timing is use Timing belt tool kit for BKD. And if you really need move camshafts manually, you need check exhaust-camshaft value (the closer to the cabin) as first. This is alpha & omega of this engine :)

I wrote it, because Google is full of tips "How to get 0.0 torsion value".. and this is bad adjusting :)

leetomsett: if engine is warm.. this is problem across all BKD engines so don't worry, it's not devastating :)

Is there more solutions, sorted by effectiveness:

1) check your injectors values at warm idle using VCDS, they may not be KO, but 4th (on 4th valve) injector is very widely used by SW in ECU (because ECU try rebalance vibrations of engine). The most important stuff: differences between injectors (1st vs. 4th and 2nd vs. 3rd) can't be huge. So if you have big difference, typicaly on 4th injector, try change order of them.

2) check your fault codes and injector loom

3) check your fuel quality and try use some good additive, checking 2-5 full fuel tanks

4) Engine Mount or Transmission Mount is not fit.

5) little DMF problem (rarely occurrence)

6) other problem..

That's interesting, I've heard a lot of conflicting views on that subject over the years.  Many say, as you mention, that the value has to be as close to 0.0 as possible. But then as you point out, every engine is meant to be unique and trying to set every one to some universal 'perfect' value won't work. I remember being told that early 1.9PD engines had a handwritten label stuck on them from the factory showing what 'torsion' value they were set to from new. I don't know if that's true?

"to be as close to 0.0 as possible" is for EDC15, but btw. better is slightly advanced (-0.5)

BKD is EDC16 engine and timing adjusting of all EDC16 engines must be made by timing tools (like in factory) :)

As I said, the most important is exhaust camshaft. BKD with ECU ending 016 should have 4.9-5.2 mg injection quantity and newer ECU ending 021 should have 6.0-6.3. Of course on warm idle
