factory optionals

Featured Replies

someone told me to day that you should tell the insurance about optionals on a new car. if not they will not pay out

is this true. if i have the estate i will have a few factory optionals fitted on it. thanks pete

I did get asked by my insurance what options were on the car

some insurance companies want them some are not worried,

eg. option wheels could make it more desirable etc

another insurance wanted an extra £50 as I had a tow bar

always better to play safe and not give them wriggle room in event of a claim

You should always declare any optional extras or mods to your insurance provider as some mods may increase the risk of theft.

The main one is so the car correct car with the correct spec is supplied in the event of a Total Loss claim or if the car needs to be repaired then it will be put back to the specification prior to the claim.

Some mods will increase the premium or be declined altogether but that depends on the individual insurance provider.

I declared all my factory fitted options with mine... just listed off so many i think they were bored by the end of it. Every one is listed on my policy and the price did not increase.

What i did notice yesterday while i was using comparethemarket was that their description of a mod is anything thats changed since it came from the factory... so while this is fine for them, i would imagine not all insurance companys think the same so its always worth mentioning (something like front assist ive heard lowers your insurance as you are less likely to have a front end prang... not sure if thats true or not, but worth mentioning if its an optional extra).

You do still have to declare them, some will increase premiums, some won't. As for the front/rear parking sensors, having them fitted doesn't lower your insurance costs, it just won't increase as they're classed as a safety aid and not a luxury, theft risk or performance enhancement.

Some insurance companies treat a factory fitted sunroof the same as a huge aftermarket turbo and body kit and really load the premium up. Others are far more reasonable but still want everything to be declared. It does make comparison sites harder to use, as their wording and definition often doesn't match the insurers.

Amusingly Skoda insurance wanted to charge me a load more to cover factory options - about twice what I ended up paying in the end.

Not parking sensors, front assist that activates your brakes if you're about to have a crash (like someone slamming their brakes on at a roundabout or pulling out in front of you).... its an impressive system.
