Mass Air Flow - Implausible Signal (Fault codes)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

First of all, thank you to all of you out there who use your experience and knowledge to help people, and special thanks to Xavier for being kind enough to help me out with his VCDS. This is (hopefully) the last chapter in my DPF woes thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/340055-dpf-worst-case-scenario-replace-please-help-i-need-my-car/

SUMMARY: In limp home mode (with flashing glow plugs + EML lights), went to garage, he said I need a DPF replacement. Queue shock and horror. Continued limping to another garage, who cleared the fault codes, got rid of limp, and recommended blasting it out on the motorway. I did so, but the flashing glow plugs came back on. Got VCDS done just now with Xavier (with flashing glow plugs on) and it shows up with just one fault code - MAF sensor implausible signal. Any thoughts on how to manage this? I found a YouTube tutorial on cleaning it, and will perhaps look for a new air filter too.

I am very happy to report that the problem is solved. With many thanks to all who gave help and advice.

Went to independent specialist... Extreme stress and prospect of £1400 bill.

Went to a main dealer... Cleared fault codes, didn't fix anything, took £70.

Did research, got your advice and Xavier with his VCDS. Went to the local mechanic and... £13 part plus £10 labour.

DONE AND DUSTED.

It was an air filter problem, the seal was broken. Can't believe two specialists couldn't have told me that.

Hi! I am the OP who had this problem back in 2015. I don't know how best to describe it, but if you look at the mass air flow apparatus, there's a filter with a rubber seal around the edge. This makes sense, as you want the air through the filter, not the edge. But that rubber seal was kinked, and there was an imperfect seal.

I don't know if that helps, but it was very much a physical issue which was easily resolved by undoing a few bits easily accessible by a non-specialist garage, getting the part from Euro then and there (can't remember specific name) and fitting it.
