Octavia - As A Run About?

Featured Replies

Hi I'm new here!

I'm getting a new S4 (going to put order in tomorrow) so I'm think 19mpg and below is a bit scary so I want a runabout, thinking a petrol (1.8t) or diesel Octavia or maybe a Fabia.

Anyways wanted to know about MPG for Octavia petrol, how much are the cheapest vRS coming in at (don't really want to spend more than

Hello Des !

Ooh Pete, you nasty old cynic, you !!!

GTI, welcome.

Now about this fuel economy. I can only speak for mine:

Motorway with cruise control on, about 38ish, at 80

Normal roads, average pace, about 32

Fun roads, fun pace, about 26

UK tracks, about 11

The Ring if ****ting it, about 6 :D

Overall average on mine is about 32. The full decat and CAI don't really help though :D

Oh, and help yourself to the smilies :D

so are the cars!;)

I think you're unlikely to get a vRS for

GTI - not many cheap RSs around at the moment. You could try the 4x4 which has the same engine and can be chipped for c.

For a run around, would you really need a 1.8T? I guess it depends where your running around, but I think for your budget you'll get a much tidier example of one of the less powerful cars. They're still very nice to drive around towns and the like, though are quite revvy on high-speed cruising.

Diesels are the ultimate for running economy, but hold their values quite well, so you'd be lucky to get a good one for your budget, but I wouldn't say it's impossible.

Rob.

In which case 4x4 fuel economy is still 32.5 mpg avg.

Tons of TDis on Autotrader for this sort of prices if you are consiedring diesel.

Stu - do they look like ex-taxis, or is the mileage on them pretty reasonable?

Rob.

Can't be taxis are they are in the 30/40,000 mile range. Most taxis aren't sold until at least 100,000 are they?

Yeah, I'd agree it does seem low for a taxi. Also most of the taxis round here are SDi instead of TDi, but there may be regional variations.

They look like "one careful owner" sort of cars, would be a great bargain... :)

... and then some.;)

Welcome GTI!

My previous Octy was a 110bhp TDI....cracking car. Well made, all the bells and whistle, good performance and excellent MPG (averaged around 50mpg). Apart from the usual start-up clatter it's quiet on the move.

Get it chipped would give better bhp but it's the torque that will improve driveability. Will be fairly quick off the mark but no point in revving the nuts off it (diesels in general). Just surf that torque curve! Should also get improved mpg.

Won't say anything about the petrol models as there's more than enough info here.

I have a remapped RS BTW.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Yup, happy with my TDi. 55 mpg average, same torque as a standard vRS (note I said standard), so keeps up in normal traffic. Only downside is lack of power for quick overtaking or getways from junctions. But, other than that, it's quite fun to drive. And Jabba do TDi remaps now as well (expect a report from JayTee later - he's there today).
