Clunk from front over speed bumps

Featured Replies

Hi all, some help diagnosing an issue with my vRS, there's a horrible clunk from the front driver's side (you can feel it through the steering) when going over speed bumps (where the wheel is forced back or forced to move further than typical). Driving over regular roads it's not evident at all and the car seems fine.

Been into garage and nothing obvious, they are suggesting replacing the suspension top-mounts as a matter of course but I'm not convinced.

Anything I can look at / check?

Cheers

Can you record a clip of the sound and post it here?

Can you get it to make the noise by rocking/pulling on the front wheels?

or get someone else to do the rocking while you sit in and listen?

I had something similar on a Focus and it was the bushes on the suspension arms.

It's not an obvious sound as such, more you can feel it.

Console Bushes I would say, had that on my old VRS, you may also notice the steering is a little sloppy too... get them replaced with uprated ones and it will feel like a different car to drive

Broken spring? Anti roll bar bush? ARB Drop link?

There's no short age of possibilities.

My 55 reg 1.9 is totally standard, but I have to take it really easy over every single speed hump, because for some reason, this car seems to be lower than all my previous ones. I reckon any sounds will be the undertrays clipping the top of the speed bumps.

mine does the same, the lip on the front bumper is for ever touching the down side of even standard speed bumps.

i have been considering a superskoda splitter but think it will just get trashed.

if you have worn tires from both sides - arm bushes.

if you have POwerflex bushes - weird noises are normal because wishbone is not made for firm bushing :-D

it may be anything - joints, top mounts.

hard to see if I don't hear it.

lift the car (with other wheel still on surface) and try to move wheel if there is any play.
