Fiat 500 hire purchase: what would you do?

Featured Replies

GF has a Fiat 500 through hire purchase. In August this year she has the option to pay £5,000 and own the car outright or hand it back and that's that.

Were expecting our first kid in April and the car isn't really suitable for kid carrying duty etc.

So the question is, is it worthwhile paying the £5k in August to then sell it for between £7-8k or just hand it back and not worry about having to try and sell it, renew insurance etc

TIA.

Well my misses has/does the same deal on her 500 and she's gonna give hers back and either get a newer/better one when the time comes

Sorry, should have mentioned she's/were not looking to replace it. Going to run just my car and put her on the insurance to drive when I'm offshore.

You had best see just what the asking price is on the identical cars,

and what the Lowest you might get selling it with quotes from WBAC or looking into Independent Dealers or even the Main Dealer.

Obviously you would need to be sure you can get more than £5000 selling it.

How many miles and tear, my daughter bought a 10 plate a year ago for £3800 with 52k miles

WBAC have offered 6.5K and looking at same age, higher mile, lower spec'd cars on autotrader vary between 7-8k.

Its a 2012 plate with 9.5k miles FFSH. Body and interior are near perfect, wheels are all kerbed.

That will change,

we are still on 64 plates, so March is 15 Plate and August hand back just before the 65 plate,

so you need to see what the 500 will get you in September if you keep it.

Asking Prices are not Private Selling prices, or even what the Vendor can achieve,

so research near the time is important.

:D Sorry, couldnt resist.

I'd say it's worth the effort for £1500-£2000 Even if you just WBAC it and made £1000

Hah, I got her a set of winter wheels/tyres too and guess what? They're all kerbed too...

Could you buy the same car now for £5000?

If not then financially it'll be worth keeping.

As for the sprog if the back seats are split folding then you'll probably muddle by. Stick the pram down the dropped side.

You don't need anything like as a much stuff as you think. The bigger the car you have the more **** you'll carry. We could have filled a transit van the first few months.

If you get a combi car seat / pram you'll only need to carry the frame.

Be very wary of WBAC prices.

I got a price for them buying my Audi S4 62 plate last year.

They offered £25.5k on the online quote system, so wanting a quick & easy sale I decided to sell to them & made the appointment.

I went to the local office 2 days later, quote in hand and sat in a small poxy room where a guy tapped in my quote ref & up popped a new price of £21800.

Asked what this meant, he said 'prices change daily mate'. WTF, 2 days & £3.7k down. He didn't even get to see my car which was immaculate, I was actually wondering how they were going to knock me down as it was showroom condition, but didn't see this coming, blatent rip off.

Absolute scam to get you there and hopefully your still desperate to sell.

I took it to the main Audi dealer the next week & got £25k as a straight cash sale.

Arnold Clark Fiat Aberdeen are not going to be treating a 500 as they would an Audi.

Look at it this way. With a baby on the way, would you go to a dealer and buy a used car for 5k to sell on in the hope you will make something on it?

WBAC values shouldn't be trusted. It's a lot of money to spend at a time you will need it. Also, if you can't shift it before the baby is born, you are going to have more issues later when you don't have as much time.

I would just hand it back and take the safe route. This is a good time for stability, not gambling.

WBAC will knock off £500 for each kerbed alloy :D

Don't tell them about the kerbed winter wheels back home in the garage, they'll knock another £2K off for those as well :D

Proving a bit difficult to find another 500 with the exact same equipment.

This is the closest I can find. Exact same colour, wheels, interior, equipment. Except the GF's car has Bluetooth and reverse parking sensors and 10k less. Theres a lower spec'd 500 for sale (private) and that has the manual turn dials for the heating etc advertised at £7,945

The kid will be born before the hire of the car is up. There's no desperate need to sell, especially after what Aspman said about not needing something as big as we think we do.

I thought with what type of car it is, free to tax, cheap to run and the appeal of it, it would be quite easy to sell.

All the ones you've found for sale are still for sale though, so that means no one wants to buy them at that price. If you want to sell it you've got to be realistic with the price and be £1000 below the cheapest for it to sell quickly. Otherwise it'll sit there waiting to sell at too high a price and you'll be bothered that it's not going to sell, stress kicks in, and it all goes wrong.

Thing to do is watch them for a few months and see what they sell for on Ebay where you can see the price after the sale (auctions and Buy It Now), and base your decision on that data.

Fiat 500.

Predominantly parked using aural cues only.

I had the polar opposite experience, took our old Fiesta ST, got within a couple of hundred quid of the website price and they ignored the temperamental abs light. I guess it'll come down to the individual place. Our local one is now in a portacabin :D

Just a wee point.

I never suggested selling the car to WBAC that is the supplier to the Motor Trade & Car Supermarkets.

Just seeing the least you might get, get a quote and expect the Cash Money might be less.

Then look at Bottom Book Prices.

WBAC are marking up as they sell your car, then the Trade is marking up.

Some Traders & Dealers will give you more than WBAC will, and then on they go making money,

because that is their business Model,  Buy Cheap & Sell for more, make profits.

If you are only selling one car & you need to pay £5,000 to own it outright then you need to know

you can Break even, and if someone wants to buy it for more then good.

As to Fiat 500's, there is not exactly a shortage of ones reaching end of lease or PCP in 2015.

The market will be full of them.

I have use WBAC and so long as you are 100% honest about everything - dings, kerbing etc then I have always got the price offered on line.
