BIG drop in Value

Featured Replies

So had my Fabia just under 4 months from brand new..

Went to test drive a Skoda Rapid Spaceback in the mind set to purchase, gave the sales guy the nod that I wanted one & he then valued my car & got my settlement figure and to my shock there is a 5k difference which of course killed the deal with the rapid!

The sales guy thinks it is because of the new Fabia and he has said the value will go back up but at the minute it is very low so anyone looking to sell I suggest you hold out for a while!

I did the exact same with the ST to get this Fabia and they were about a £700 difference not 5k and with the ST the finance deal had APR with Skoda it is 0%!

The new fabia looks horrible imo, not a fan at all, looks basic

Surely the value of the MK 2 Fabia will rise. Demand will stay the same and no one will buy the MK 3 because it's horrible despite being car of the year and people will keep their MK 2s because there's nothing worth buying to replace. So keep your MK 2 for a while and maybe in a years time who knows, it might be worth £30K

5k is a big drop but then again not entirely unexpected after only 4 months. You are on the steepest part of the depreciation curve at the moment!

You have the same car as I do.

Do you have the 1.2 TSI engine? The reason I am looking for something else is I am not impressed with the fuel economy and I wanted something quicker.

I know the 1.6 TDI in the rapid is 105BHP too but it feels more gutsy and with the MPG figures I would be happy with it.

Yeah i have the 1.2 tsi 105, the economy is good when i drive it sensibly otherwise if i've always got my foot down then i get around 29mpg. I think it's quite nippy but you get used to it after a while but 4 months is quite soon haha. Maybe get a Bluespark tuning box, only £130...

Just looked, £175?

I think if I were to go down that route I would use a company like Shark.

This may sound completely stupid but how can the new mk3 fabia be car of the year already, it's not even the end of January?!?!

There's ones for around £130 ish. Hm Shark do remaps right? I'd rather get a box so then i can sell it on after whereas a remap is either there or gone forever haha

Maybe they looked at it before it was released somehow? I dunno but in my eyes it doesn't look better than the mk2 and nowhere near as sporty

That's coz the sporty version isn't out yet!!!

You can hardly call any Fabia sporty looking unless it's a vRS or Monte, the standard Fabia is no looker so wait until the Monte comes out in September and see what it looks like then. I think in standard trim the new MkIII looks tonnes better than the MkII but that's only my opinion of course.

Did you pay too much in the first place for the Black Edition Fabia,?

Skoda turned them out with advertising but they were doing them as a run out model at not as much of a bargain unless someone was maybe buying a Keeper.

Yeah the standard fabias aren't as sporty as the vrs or monte obviously but the new fabias just look like a polo and a seat merged together, if it wasn't for the badge i'd get confused

No, I think he means how come it's car of the year already in the sense that there's still another 11 months left to release more cars that could be better. And I don't know either. But it is because it says so.

What annoys me is Ford generally are well known for not retaining value but I held the ST the same amount of time I have held the Skoda and not lost that much :/

Sorry but what ST did you buy new and keep for about 4 months, a Fiesta ST?

You loose a hell of a lot in the first 12 months regardless of make/model, then the depreciation rate flattens off. Typically the car will be in negative equity until its around 18 months old (on traditional HP/Loan, PCP less). Then factor in the old shape model, people like new models. Look at what happened to the Octavia MK2, its value is dropping like a stone.

Yes.

Thats the difference from a car that is flavour of the moment,

and the likes of the Monte Carlos that have never been in great demand other than when Skoda UK cut the price and

marketed the Tech editions.

The last models are never going to be worth much.

Ouch only 29mpg? I get just over 30mpg in my VRS :0

100% this.

If you are wanting to change car, ideally, you normally need to wait to till 2 years into a finance/pcp deal to make it most cost effective!

George is bang on.

The Fiesta ST is a sought after car, which is reflected in the residual values.  Even though there are a fair number about.

The mk2 Fabia Black Edition is a run out model of a car that's less popular that the Fiesta and about to be replaced with a new and improved version.

Anyone buying a new Fabia in the last year should have expected hideous depreciation.  It's not a surprise to me.

People on this thread saying they don't like the mk3 is irrelevent.

It's the newer model and the mk2 is older.  Market demand drives prices, not what a few people on a forum think that are biased as they already own the car.

I think the OP made the swap to the Fabia in order to save money. Just goes to show it's not often cost-effective to swap one new car for another even if the "monthlies" are lower. You just get hit with depreciation loss on two vehicles.

Might have made more sense for the OP to remain in the ST (provided he wouldn't be defaulting on the monthly payment). Plus it's a much nicer car than the Fabia!

Buying a brand new car to save money?

That's a new one on me.

You could run a really nice two or three year old car for less than an average new one, once you take into account the actual costs of owning rather than just fuel and insurance/VED.

Very true.

I swapped from the Furby into a used BMW, I pay more per month but my fuel bill has halved and the tax and insurance is less too.  So it's not always about monthly payments, cost of running it in between the monthlies is just as important.

I'm quids up now and hopefully as some poor sod has already taken the depreciation hit on it, in 3 years I will have some equity at trade in/up time to a M135i.... and 120d badge for the back of it the keep SWMBO happy.
