Torquing the head?

Featured Replies

I've never seen this mentioned on any of the forums, so I assume the answer is no. But I'll ask it anyway.

Does the torque on the cylinder head bolts need checking on new cars after a period? I only ask, because I remember when replacing head gaskets on past cars, the manual always suggested checking and retorquing if neccesary after maybe a thousand miles.

It may not be suggested in car manuals as part of the running in process, but is it worth checking or not. Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Mark

Yes you are correct the answer is NO. Leave well alone as alot of heads these days use stretch bolts, where they are torqued to a low figure followed by say 90 degrees and another 90 degrees. These bolts need replacing after one use.

The 8 valve 1.4 skoda engine does not use stretch bolts, but I have never seen a schedule for checking them.
