Dimming rear view mirror - cars appear on my rear bumper!

Featured Replies

The vRS is the first car I've had with a self dimming rear view mirror but I'm not sure if it's me but I always think that the car behind is now closer (up my arse!) than in other cars. Anyone else noticed this when driving at night?

It could be that the vRS attracts people who wanna race and hence come up close, but I think if I look in the side mirrors the car is actually further back. I think the actual answer is that with no dimming rear view mirror, cars behind actually appear dimmer if they are really close, as the headlight beam is lost below the rear window, hence I'm probably just automatically thinking this. Or it could be I'm just only a few months into driving the octy and just not used to the size/visibility ?

Tbh. My fabia mirror seems to 'zoom' more than other cars I've driven.

Had a week of thinking everyone was tail gating when i first got it haha

I'm not experiencing the same effect as you but I'm not keen on mine either.  I've had it since Easter and still don't like the fact that I can't clearly see what/who is behind me.  When it dims, a lot of detail is lost and I'm not keen on that.  I've considered covering the sensor as I'd then be able to make out what's following me as I find that as useful as what's happening in front.

Hi Exeterj, can't help you with this 'oddity', but reading your post didn't half remind me of a previous post of mine. See 'briskoda sticker' in ask a tech, Dohhh! Hope you won't lose sleep, like i did lol.

I'm not sure about the MkIII but in the MkII manual there was a warning that when viewed through the door (or wing) mirrors objects will appear closer than they actually are.

So this would seem to suggest that the cars are indeed try to slip stream you :D

Yup. Says it on all Harley Davidson mirrors too.

All mirrors do that (:

I always end up singing it in my head to the tune of meatloaf.

When it dips, is it not like the manual dip ones?

They also lose detail. Just see headlights n darkness around em dont they.

Can you not just press the button to turn the dimming function off ?

I'd forgotten about this, so will try turning it off when I'm next out at night to see if things appear further away! It takes a few seconds to re-brighten I think

It is the same but with a manual mirror I can choose not to do so.  The issue is that the car decides for me.

Don't forget this is a Vauxhall and not as fancy as the offerings from VW.  As far as I'm aware there isn't an off switch. :(
