Ibiza TDI power steering issue.

Featured Replies

This probably should be in the Fabia 1 section as similar car I suspect.

Had someone saying to me they have fitted a replacement power steering pump to their 2003 Ibiza TDI, but it is only working for a tiny bit of the travel.  "5mm" as he said.

Now I've had my fair share of PAS issues, and in this case there is also no light on the dash.  So what could cause the system to effectively be frozen, and then free up at certain points like that?  The only things cropped in my head were not enough PAS fluid in the system or weak battery / dropping voltage?

What do they mean by 5mm of travel?

Recently ive had a few PAS issues, with steering going lumpy after its been raining (i believe its the old moisture in the steering angle sensor problem), I also changed the battery ground lead which helped things as the old one was quite corroded.

but as they are quite common things to check with PAS im guessing they already have?

I wasn't sure either - If they meant 5mm of steering wheel travel, which to me means basically nothing :D  or 5mm of physical rack movement - maybe more likely?

Earth sounds a good shout.  Worth checking.  Baring in mind the pump has been swapped over, something could have been missed.  Also, alternator has been recently changed too.
