73% of tyres in accidents have the wrong tyre pressure

Though I suspect the real reason is more like 95% of cars have the wrong tyres pressure all the time.

On that logic, you have a better chance of not having a crash by having inflating with the wrong tyre pressures :D

Seriously though, very scary! My Dad never checks his from one month to another. We recently went on a long trip in his car & he said the steering had been a bit funny the last few months.

I insisted he check his tyres at the next petrol station. They varied from 12-24psi.

He couldn't believe how well the car drove after getting them to the correct pressure. Unfortunately I reckon groundhog day will return :(

I've got a digital tyre pressure gauge attached to my key ring, I'm obsessed with the position of the steering wheel in the straight ahead, and pulling to one side. Having more than a couple of psi difference on the fronts is noticeable.

I never knew that nitrogen was less prone to leaking :wonder:

Air is ~ 78% Nitrogen anyway, so if the 20% of other gases leech out, does that not mean your tyres are left with almost 100% Nitrogen in them

It's because Natural Nitrogen is a lot thicker than air. It's like a jelly   :notme:

I've got a little digi gauge in the car now too and a 12v pump.

I used to car share with my mate. he was complaining about the cars handling one day so I said I'd check his tyres with my 12v pump. His were 12psi all round, should have been 32. Hadn't checked them, ever. He bought a pump after that and is a reformed character.

I fill my tyres with water. It's a lot thicker than air. :D

Hot water or cold, I think hots better as the steam makes the car lighter

I leave it in a bucket outside for 2 days so it is at the same temperature as the surroundings when it is put into the tyres as you don't want to have a change in temperature after putting it in. It you start with cold water it will expand when it gets warmer and if you start with hot water it will get smaller so you will have lower pressure in your tyres.

Have you tried Heavy Water, It's good for a windy day, the car is more stable

I have heard that heavy water is good for lowering the center of gravity. I haven't got any heavy water at the minute but I may be able to get some from somewhere before the Brisky national.

Yeah. Gets tricky on days like today though. -5 this morning.

I noticed the ride quality was very firm and sporty when i set off.

Yeah, well the thing is you can't apply the same logic to it on cold days like this because in temperatures below 4 degrees water starts to expand as it gets colder so the opposite applies, and have you ever tried getting blocks of ice past the valve?
