Alcantara seat "ballooning"

Featured Replies

I just noticed that the driver's seat on my 10-day old Scout has the Alcantara material "ballooning" upwards. Seems fine when I am sitting in the seat, but looks a bit off when one looks at the seat. As if there is just a little excess material which makes the seat cover stand out an inch or so. This is on the seat cushion, not the backrest. The passenger seat seems fine. Anyone else seen this happen with Alcantara seats? Any solution or is it back to the dealer?

Mine as done the same =(

Yep my year old did this from almost new (leather alcantara mix in Elegance)

Basically its a combination of the seat cover and base materials giving; sadly the cover and base materials are not attached by any means. My old leather trimmed vRS went a similar way not long after I got it too.

Given the car is pretty solid a bit of a shame as it looks a bit naff....a mix of cheap trim and base materials (Skoda never have done Alcantara or leather seat trims particularly well IMHO).

A potential temporary resolution....put a flannel in a small bowl of water in the microwave for a short time until its hot; quickly take it to the car and lay it on the base....it might encourage the seat cover to shrink a bit and look less baggy but do at your own risk and be careful jot to burn yourself or damage the trim.

If its any consolation I saw a new Mk7 R with vienna leather parked up somewhere the other day and the centre of the seat base had balooned badly too so its not just Skodas that it inflicts.

BTW it will start to affect the passenger seat before too long as it gets more use. I go solo in my car most of the time (only in it as a family at weekends on the most part)...as a consequence the passenger seat looks better but after 1 year/17.5k miles it is starting to do the same.

Surely it's back to the dealer to sort out, if you try yourself and it goes wrong then they will refute any claim.

Report it, get it logged with Skoda and insist it is corrected as quickly as possible.

I hope my Alcantara seats last longer than 10 days or there will be hell to pay

The seat base cover on my 1Year old vRS has started to bag a bit too, I'm 11 1/2 stone soaking wet. It goes back to shape after a while. Bugs me.

I very much doubt SUK will approve a claim; its just how they naturally wear.

When you pay a few K less than the equivalent VW then I guess somethings got to give right?

I had Alcantara seats in my last Passat SEL and never a problem with the seat covering, as the OP is in Norway they may, hopefully, take a more positive view that SUK !

I would still battle it out anyway......

I had cloth alcantara in my last Mk6 Golf GT (or Highline for those not in the UK) and that looked more or less perfect after 50k relatively hard miles. Of the three skodas Ive owned the only one whose interior wore well was a cloth trimmed Mk2 Fabia vRS

Don't fart so much?...........

Nope 10k miles and don't have this, have you tried sliding around in the seat under hard cornering, acceleration or braking ? just might be the difference, if not it'll make you smile a bit more.

11 months and 15k....no baggy seat...

My Octavia Elegance is 3 weeks old and doing this. Has anyone contacted a skoda dealer about it yet???

I took it back to the dealer a few days after I originally posted on here. A guy from the maintenance department took photographs and asked me to come back if it got worse. Hasn't got any worse so far, maybe better or at least more even on the seat cushion, making it less noticeable.

Have you?

My car rather helpfully opened all it's windows in the rain at work! I think my keyring had pressed the open doors button in my pocket continuously opening the door an all windows. The seats therefore got soaking wet! The alcantara stretched giving the bubble in the middle. Over the last week it seems to have reshaped again and the bulge seems to have gone again at present.

It might just have been the dampness on the seat which had caused the stretching?

22 months old, 13k.  No wear or defects on the seat whatsoever.

Superb seats with alcantara - 95k miles over 4 years, and absolutely no issues whatsoever.

Granted seats may be different design though.

There is a VCDS setting to auto close windows on rain sensing, its somewhere in the know VCDS mods at the top of the main page, should help prevent this in future.

Thanks! I found how to switch this off with the maxidot as well.
