Driving in Europe

Featured Replies

Hi all

So in a few months time I'm goin to be driving through Europe in my mk2 octavia vrs, I've read online that I'm going to need to use beam benders on the headlights, as there's no beam pattern on the headlight how do you line then up? Or is there a way of switching them over as they are projector lights?

Thanks.

Yes you can switch them over. There is a guide on here somewhere, take light units out, remove bulbs, pull down little lever till its level. Kept mine setup that way just incase I decide to go on a whim. Pre-FL i assume? if not its a slightly different method. and are they halogen or xenon?

I just put the beam benders on, they give you a leaflet with fitting instructions on, the reason I do this is my french isn't that good, so if I were stopped by the French police it's easier to point to the beam benders than trying to explain in French that you've taken the headlights out and flattened the beam by flicking a lever inside the headlight.

I have never been asked about the headlights.  That's since the 70's, and 4 or 5 trips abroad each year.  There are far less police about in France, Germany or Italy with concerns about you and your car than here.

I have been stopped once, bang to rights on radar for speeding.  Once the nice men realised it was going to involve more hard work than they wished to get involved with and might interfere with their lunch, they shrugged, pointed at the speedo and walked off.

I don't even bother doing the sliding thing anymore, as I rarely drive after dark, and if absolutely necessary just roll the height adjuster to max.

I am a bit shy of sticking stuff to the headlamps as they are polycarbonate and that is degraded by by all sorts of solvents and glues.

And what about others? Your headlights blind, road safety first guys!
