Towing an Airstream with a Yeti?

Featured Replies

New to this forum and wondered if I could post question? We are thinking in the future (or just a dream) of buying an Airstream, the 534 model (single axle). One of the concerns is a suitable car to tow the Airstream, the weight of the 534 is around 1,478kg (MRO), maximum payload weight is 1,700kg, would the 4x4 Yeti 140 be capable of towing this weight. There is the caravan rule (not the law just a guide) MTPLM 85% of kirb weight of the car, 100% for the more experienced. Wondered if anyone has towed a large caravan with their Yeti. In the skoda manual it says maximum towing weight braked of 2,100kg? Whenever you see images of the Airstreams always towed by big 4x4s not something we want to change to!

Thanks for any advice

I saw one carrying a helicopter on Top Gear if that counts!! ;)

I presume you have an "old" driving licence?

Whilst the MPTW of the new Yeti's is 2100kg the MGW of that Aerostream is more than the Yeti kerb weight of 1610kg.

Perhaps that is why you see them towed by bigger cars.

Personally I wouldn't recommend it.

I wouldn't recommend it either .... they did import an Airstream Bambi for a while which would have been OK.

Thanks for your replies, did wonder if it was heavy enough! They don't sell the Bambi anymore, also we wanted a 3 birth

Personally I wouldn't have a problem with it because the kerb weight listed by Skoda seems 'optimistic'.

When we weighed our 2015 Elegance 4x4 170 it came out at 1580kg full of fuel but empty and without driver. Our car doesn't have a spare wheel or glass roof and is absolutely bog standard apart from the fixed tow bar. Once you add people and kit to the car you'll quickly re-establish your 85% ratio.

For what it worth our Yeti's kerb weight increases to nearly 2000kg (whilst staying within front and rear axle limits) once you add 220kg of people, a roof box with 60kg in it and a boot full of gear!
