Wendy had a quick spin in the L&K Demo at our local dealers & I was passenger.

Initial Impression was that in Auto mode the changes are super sweet when your really pushing the car but somewhat disapointing when driving gently, It all appeared dare I say a bit "Gimmicky". Is it worth paying an extra grand for a car that uses more fuel, not sure yet. The Auto would certainly be better for town driving & present car has covered 90000 in 30 months so Wendy does a lot of miles.

For those who are living with this box does it get smoother with age, Ive also heard it gives a much sweeter drive on the 1.9 Engine, can anyone confirm this ??

Have not tried a 2.o DSG , but took a 1.9 DSG out for test drive a few weeks ago , found the fuel consumption was very very good , only downside i thought was increase in transmission noise inside the car , constant drone in background compared to a manual . Yet to try a 2.0 , and see if it less noisey , what was your impression .

Noise wise didnt seem too bad, I didnt notice the drone but in all fairness the test car had something loose in the boot & some loose rattly trim which was a tadge anoying.

I will be interested to see your comparison when you try the 2.0.

I believe the 1.9 is virtually the same engins as the old 1.9 110 although 5 bhp less but I might be wrong. Our current 110 is remapped to 164 bhp & regularly gives 50+ mpg.

I havent got a brochure to hand to compare the published mpg figures for the 1.9 & 2.0.

Ive heard & again it might just be rumour but some people are saying the newer generation Diesels whilst giving lower emissions use more fuel doing it due to the restrictive exhausts etc

I test drove the 1.9 and bought the 2.0 and find it quieter. I can't say I've had any problems regarding the gear change at slow speeds. I find it very smooth. Couldn't tell when it happens if it wasn't for the engine noise. I only use manual on real twisties where the box would change up/down but I know to keep in gear for the next bend etc.

Wouldn't recommend the 2.0 without the DSG as it has very lumpy power delivery which the DSG smooths out nicely.

It's funny you should say that - because I think the changes are smoother when you're driving gently than when you're driving hard! I think it's an excellent gearbox but, like any change of car, takes a bit of getting used to. At

I don't have a problem with the DSG. I find it very smooth when you driving it hard and probably even smoother when driving gently, most of the time you cannot feel the gear changes. As has been said before the DSG definately smoothes out the power delivery from the 2.0 tdi and I personally find it a joy to drive. The only time it does feel a little 'peaky' is when you need to give it some welly when reversing up hill. It seems to drop the clutch a little abruptly, but you very soon get use to it so it's not really a problem. So far Consumption wise i'm getting 500 miles to a tank on mixed driving and the engine has only done 1500 miles so i'm hoping that this will get even better. I'm very pleased that I went for the DSG, I think it's well worth the extra cost.

The 1.9 105 in the Octy2 is a PD engine and not the same as the old electronic diesel pump 90/110bhp engine.

It's more directly related to the PD100 Fabia engine and the PD115bhp engines in other VAG's.

In my experience the PD's are more refined and have a bigger kick but don't match the economy of the 90/110TDi's which still hold the record as the most thermally efficient engine fitted to a production road car.
