mpg not great , any tips ?

Featured Replies

Coolant Temperature Sensor.

Could be the MAF playing up as well.

Replace the thermostat if it isn't warming up properly.

Ok , so after work today I plugged my car into my snap on solus machine and came back with no fault codes . Although the selection of engine codes didn't seem correct . If the maf was playing up would it throw up a fault code ? . The car warms up fine , after 3 miles on the dual carriage it was upto 90 degrees .

Would i get a fault code on my snap on solus if the MAF was playing up ? Or would it come up with a fault code if it completely breaks down ?

MAF can drift and lie without going outside parameters and flagging a fault. same with the CTS.

I need to plug the car into vcds really don't I ?

Thank you for your help and pointing me in the right direction .

I decided to order a CTS today . So see what difference that will make Monday . Fingers crossed .

Received my cts today . Its grey with part number 06a 919 501a on it . Can anyone confirm this correct ?

If it fits then it's right.

Well as one member said before.... check the cambelt and water pump has been changed ! If either of these two go then all the talk about MPG is pointless as the car will more than likely be written off. Its something a lot of people don't think about before buying older cars.... i always have done, both my cars had the cambelt and waterpump changed when they should have been, the number of cars i have called about for friends who were somewhat vague when it comes to the cambelt was amazing.

Yeah definitely going to get it done .

Ok people . Thought I'd bring this topic back as I'm still not sure that my car is right .

In the last week I done these things to my car .

Cambelt and water pump

Clean egr and inlet manifold (which hadn't been done ever)

New maf

New cts

New thermostat

Full service

Geometry

and im still only getting in the low 40's on my average mpg .

I put £30 of diesel in and I got just under 300 miles from it .

I work this out to be about 50mpg . Im confused , something is not quite right .

I konw someone can help as always this forum does .

The on board trip computer can be a bit hit and miss when it comes to mpg. If you're getting 50mpg from your own calculations then that is pretty reasonable for a vRS. Bear in mind that average mpg will drop if your sat in traffic idling and you have a fair bit of stop/start on your commute.

Have you reset everything on the trip computer and tried unhooking the battery for a good hour to truly reset everything to try and get a more real/accurate reading? (make sure you have the radio code before trying this)

The only other thing I can suggest is run some FORTE diesel treatment through 3/4 tank of fuel. This will help remove any deposits from the injectors and improve the spray pattern.

Who did the cam belt, did they check the torsion value with VCDS afterwards and adjust accordingly? This is very important for good running and MPG. The locking tools don't always keep everything perfectly set and that's assuming it was set right in the first place. It only takes a small movement to put it out enough to have a negative impact on the running and mpg.

My commute is all dual carriageway with a few roundabouts joining them for 16miles .

I'll try the reset including disconnecting the battery . I'll also purchase some FORTE diesel treatment too .

The cambelt was fitted by a recommended garage who we use at work . They are a vag specialist that have been going for just over 30 years so I feel confident that they have set it up correctly .

Thank you for all your help mattbvRS .

300 miles on £30 is good enough!

I think your getting too hung up on what your dash is saying.

IIRC the trip computer is adjustable with vcds.

Does your mileage seem to be reading/going up correctly?

Yes I think I'm very hung up on what the dash is displaying , its very frustrating .

As for the milage reading , I do sometimes question it . I don't think it's right . I'll have to get an app to measure it another way and then compare the two .

As for vcds , I think I'm just going to have to purchase it . But I'm a little unsure of it . I'm good with tools , but not computers .

I'm the same, but I've only got VCDS lite for logging and fault codes but that is pretty easy to use tbh. :)

Put a thread up in the VCDS section of forum see if anyone local to you will help out.

I'm currently trying rhino diesel and it seems to improve my mpg from 51 to about 54 . Could be the slightly warmer weather improving mpg.

Can anyone suggest a decent app so I can measure my speed and distance on my phone and then compare the two ? I know gps on some apps aren't that spot on but I'd just like to compare the two .

The best app I've come acoross is torque pro by far. Can also be used for many other things when combined with a Bluetooth obd adapter

Can you suggest any bluetooth obd adaptor for this app ? as there is so many to choose from .

I just got one of the mini ones, works ok but there are probably better ones out there. Just search eBay for obd2 Bluetooth and take your pick. Definitely go with a UK seller though

Torque + elm327 bluetooth adapter works well for me
