Road salt

Featured Replies

Just wondering how folks remove the road salt from under their cars & is it worth trying to protect the underneath before the next winter?

If you drive fast enough over a ramp then you won't need any special cleaning stuff.

I like the side of my car though so I just don't bother with underneath.

I have a Nilfisk pressure washer and It came with an assortment of nozzles...one is an "under chassis" nozzle, which does a good job of the underbody/wheel arches.

I've got an old karcher attachment which is basically a standard nozzle but on a 1m lance with a 90° bend in it.

Used to clean the mud off the underside today after driving across a particularly muddy building site.

Like the one in the link below, but mine is one piece.

Underbody lance from Direct Hoses, it's cheaper than the AD one & IMO it's better/safer as it has a rubber shroud & not a hard plastic one.

If you have a Karcher and a spare £80, take a look at this:

I'm guilty for never taking much care of the underside :(  On this car, all I do is blast the pressure washer underneath as best I can.

i have one of these and they are very effective. first time i used it there was so much crud that was left in the driveway it was quite shocking. well worth the money imho.

This looks like the type of thing that could do the job easily & effectively, but i have a Nilfisk washer lol

I have been looking on youtube, which has a few different diy ideas just to plug on the hose.

Thanks for everyones help ; )

Karcher also have a specific under body wash system.

Looks very much like the 1 planehazza posted, but thanks mannyo ; )

I have this:

Very effective indeed

A great addition for anyone serious about removing salt

Cheers ChrisRs, i'm keeping it in mind, would you bother to spray anything onto the floorpan after cleaning it to give it some protection from rust?

It's just most folks wax the shiny bits to within an inch of it's life, but not much said about protecting the underneath?

Looks a bit overkill to me IMO and looking at how it works it's got an achillies heel in that it won't effectively do the wheel arches which are arguably the most important, where as the type Chris has allows you to get at the whole of the wheel arch including the inside of the wings and also behind the wheels too

No ....Its well protected from the Factory, but plastic wheel arch trims do benefit from some Plastic Dressing
