Engine choice advice

Featured Replies

Hi, apart from an old Range Rover, I never owned a diesel car. At the moment I am driving a BMW 3 series Touring 318i - it's no rocket but drives well and get 38 mpg.

I am now getting an Octavia Estate. I decided to get the 2.0 Tdi as I assume it's better in the estate.

Then someone confused me as they told me that since I do nit cover a lot of miles I should get a petrol due to dpf issues!

I plan on keeping the car for a long time.

I cover under 10k a year but I want a powerful car that doesn't drink too much fuel.

Any suggestions? I am trying the 1.6 on Tuesday.

Thanks

Dave

It would take you quite a few years to make a diesel worthwhile , don't jump to conclusions about the smaller engines either some still carry quite a punch , best bet is to drive a few and see what you think

I have one and love it, very easy to live with especially with dsg box. I've come from 2003 1.9 tdi A6 and find the Octavia much more refined. Wife also really likes it and she is not a confident driver.

Long motorway runs see high 40mpg, daily commute through town sees low 30s. Quite a few conversations on Octy 3 forum on tsi v tdi debate.

I have the 1.8 TSI DSG and goes well. I prefer the hatch to the estate. To be honest can't stand estate cars. There is not much difference in the estate to the hatch, just a higher roof at the back, width, depth etc is the same. How many times in the space of owning it, you going to load it over the window line?

I have driven the 1.6 TDI and its to be blunt, crap. The old 1.9 was far better. The 1.6 you have to redline to get any horses going. If your going the Diesel route then 2.0 TDI all the way. Nice low rev pull just raise the clutch and off you go. 1.4 TSI is not bad but lacks ummmffff
