2007 Octavia II BKD - EGR Cooler P/N?

Featured Replies

Morning

I think I will need to change the EGR cooler before the summer as there were leaks last year which were sealed with a dose of Silver Seal, but I'm not sure I'll trust that for the summer heat and sitting in long queues!

However, not wishing to fork out over £300 for a new EGR cooler, I'm looking at getting a s/h one off eBay, and then getting it cleaned and pressure-tested before it is fitted - so does anyone know the VAG P/N for the correct unit as I seem to see a number of different ones on eBay and some of them are stated not to be suitable for Octy use, whereas they are said to fit various Golfs, Audis, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

John

Y don't you just get rid of it and the egr? Cost is £100 or less for all the parts from darkside.

The labour will whack the cost up unless you do it yourself like I did.

I have 2 coolers which are perfectly fine..

Drop me a PM and we can sort something out.

It's a road car and been mapped for economy reasons - the EGR (and cooler) help with that, so don't want to do an EGR delete!

This is getting "complicated":

- on eBay, the number  "03G131512 L", and all other suffixes on that number, show long, essentially cylindrical, coolers

- OTOH, searches on eBay for coolers for BKD engines throw up the number "03G 131 513" with various suffixes, and these are all essentially larger and flat-sided coolers!

Looks like I need to tread carefully on this - so does anyone else have any info that could shed some more light on the situation?

Thanks in advance.

03G 131 513 J (for example) is the part number for an EGR cooler from a 2004 Golf BKD engine. This part was dropped in 2005 and was replaced by part number 03G 131 512 L.

If you want an old part then use the old number, but if you went to a dealers (or anywhere else for that matter) to buy a new part then the part number is 03G 131 512 L.

Honest.

If you'd like to post up some other random part numbers I'll tel you where they were used and when they were replaced with the new part.

So would 03G 131 512 B fit?

That part number is not found in Etka. Sure it's correct?

Just sometimes they fit a part number as a factory fit part, and change it for replacement parts so that the original isn't listed as a replacement part.

Edit: It's not 03L 131 512 B is it?

Thats good John.

Im still waiting for the funds to be able to reMap mine but im still getting great MPG on Runs 54/56 between 70-80mph on MWays and average about 43-46 normally so im pretty happy about that with the mileage of car.

It has got marginally better since removing the EGR and cleaning the Turbo though but only 1 or 2 but more consistant.

That is probably cleaning the turbo though so things are just cleaner and smoother and easier to drive.

Yeah sorry it was a typo..

Yeah, that part is from a different engine code (CEGB as I recall). It might not fit, but I don't know.

Thanks for all the replies - and the mystery deepens w.r.t. the 03L 131 512 B!

A search on eBay for that number threw up a number of coolers, and the first two claimed to be that P/N but they look entirely different!

One has a wide flat body and what looks like twin exhaust connections at one end, whilst the other one is a long tubular one with exhaust connections at each end!

I will really have to make an effort at the weekend to take a very close look (without dismantling anything) at the cooler on my car to see if I can determine which type appears to be fitted.

I wouldn't put too much faith in the pictures shown on Ebay auctions. Sellers are invariably lazy and pinch pictures from anywhere to advertise their own parts. Unless they state that the part pictured is the one you'll receive then there's a good chance it's just a pic from somewhere.

Could be true - especially in this instance - but hopefully I will be able to resolve something at the weekend (?)

I should have the EGR parts from my previous Octy - MY05 PD140 BKD. I fitted an EGR bypass.

If you want I can dig those out of the garage, and see if they're of any use to you?

Pretty certain the EGR design on the PD170 was slightly different.

Finally managed to wiggle a small camera down behind the top of the engine and got a shot, as attached, of the back of the cooler and it is a 03g 131 513J !

I assume that another 513J would be a direct like-for-like replacement, but would a 512L require other parts such as hoses (etc.) to also be changed in order to fit it?

Edit: Update - from all the on-line pics I can see of 512-series coolers, they look physically quite a bit different and look like they need some different hoses and so on - but it would be good if someone could confirm that!

Thanks in advance.

Hi and Thanks

Please see the above post, and can you find out which one you do have, as I will probably interested in it !

Thanks in advance.

I'll get you some part numbers off the assembly yet. It's sat in a box in the garage, so easy to get information from

Many thanks - please keep me posted!

John

Will hopefully be able to check for you today

Checked the one I have in storage, can't see a similarity to the part numbers already listed - the plot thickens!

038 129 637 D is stamped on the housing, 038 131 501 AF on the top.

But the benefit I have, is I'm not a random eBay seller and can confirm it was fitted and working on a 2005 Octy2 PD140 :D
