Why practise detailing on a scrap panel when... £120 Ford Focus!

Featured Replies

... you can get a whole car.

This came up half a mile away.  Couldn't really turn it down....  Simply wanted for nothing more than to practise car detailing.  On a panel by panel basis I shall be trying different things, and attempting to get this shed looking a little better.

It's a 1998 Ford Focus Estate with a (running OK... ish.... :D) 2 litre petrol lump.  Apart from the paintwork to practise on, it needs 3 tyres and a blowing exhaust looked at.  I'm hopeful I can do this myself (to a point) and MOT it in March to move on again once I am done with the paint.

paintwork is OK.... Ahem.

And the flash on my camera is pants, but you get the point.  It's a blue estate,  It was cheap.

These are so easy to work on Jase, look forward to the progress

Nice ford paint. I think it was best mates with a car wash. Can't wait for the after shots

Just realised I had access to pics from the advert put up.

She doesn't look too bad from this distance.  :D

Well I got bored at work so left 90 minutes early as really wanted to check this car over and start work :D

So I spent about an hour on it.  Firstly decontaminating one side and the front/back - process of soak, tardis, wash off, wash car, iron out - wash off whilst also using clay mitt at same time to make use of the detergent in iron out.

I also did the wheels which were thankfully not black with caked on brake dust, but fairly fresh brake dust / dirt.

Yucky wheel

After good soak with autosmart wheel cleaner

Then iron out put on and pinking up nicely showing more brake dust there

And finally one clean wheel.  might attempt to brush on some alloy wheel paint to the scabs to tidy it up a little

and the car (the good side....) and she is scrubbing up OK.  Still yet to even touch with a machine polisher. :)

So, the fan wasn't working and the clues given by the previous owner - "worked only on 4 for a while" - Oh that sounds familiar!  and "Worked for a while hitting the switch, now doesn't" = new switch.  Managed to get panel for a fiver off Ebay + £3.50 postage and a new resistor is on its way from Hong Kong.  Hope to have blowers again soon!

Not sure when I am going to get around to the paint correction.  This weekend is busy with a paying customer, so I am unlikely to have time.  Possibly sunday morning I can make a start on a few panels.

Good start Jason

But......May I ask why you didnt remove the wheels?

They are so bad, the inner section and wheel arch liner will be bad too...or is that next?

When I find 4 tyres to replace all the shot ones on the car now, I will be putting it on axle stands so I can do a "proper job" - I have to admit, on a car like this I am really not too fussed about the insides of the rims or the wheelarches.

If it needs any suspension parts etc Jase give us a shout as I've got some cheap bits lying about after someone let me down.

It seems OK in that respect.  It sounds like the exhaust is blowing in the area around the back of the engine.  I have yet to see how easy that will be for me to sort.  I am sure it will be needed for MOT 15th March if I decide to put it through.

Well, machine polished on Sunday.  Little gutted I didn't get shots at the time as it rained today, but she's looking swell.  (As swell as a £120 car can! :D)

Front N/S headlight wet sanded and polished up.  No longer MOT advisory like last year.

Looking reasonably sharp

And down the nearside. Scuffing still evident on the rear bumper corner, but it was a LOT worse before my wet sanding yesterday
