Whine

Featured Replies

Noticed a whining sound coming from engine bay. Haven't been able to locate it ye, but it starts being noticeable at 2500rpm ish and get louder and more high pitched as rpms climb.

Do the turbos in these tsi engines make much spooling noise? I turned off climate control and the sound didn't seem to change. Could just be a be a belt though?

Also, it seems to be worse in third gear, but I need to confirm this.

What else could it be?

I generally start to think bearing if someone mentions whine.  Can you tell which side of the engine it comes from?

Is it road speed or engine speed dependant?  Does it go away if you go into neutral?

Could be an over tensioned drive belt.

Have you tried using a stethoscope?  I mention this with trepidation - in the old days we just put a long screwdriver on the suspect area and all sorts of noises became apparent. The proper stethoscope kits are allegedly not very expensive.

Watch out for hair and anything dangley getting in whirly bits.

I think it's the passenger side which indicated transmission, but it could also indicate a million other things...

I'll confirm the things you've asked tonight or tomorrow when I'm next out in it.

OK, the whine is definitely RPM related.  2000RPM in third for example, you can hear it faintly.  Gets louder and increases pitch as RPM increases. Press the clutch down, and when the RPMs plummet to idle, the whine sound goes.  Could it be boost/turbo related?

Clutch bearing?
