Please help cars gone bananas.

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I apologise if someone has already posted about this. I've read lots of posts about central locking but yet to find one that answers my question.

Approx 2 years ago my car suffered from the dreaded drivers door won't lock on the button syndrome. No big deal I've just locked and unlocked the car by the key. It worked so I lived with it.

However......

This morning I get in the car to goto work and it just keeps locking the rest of the car. If I press unlock it locks time and time again. On my break I took the door card off thinking if I unplug the drivers door latch it would solve the possible micro switch problem... still did it so I also unplugged the window motor / control unit and yet again still doing it.

Now I've managed to source a parts list (many thanks to the briskoda member who is an absolute life saver) which I'm hoping will cure the problem but with me unplugging the latch and motor and it still doing it, it's kind of bugging me that I may need to replace something else.

I'm going to replace the drivers door wiring loom, window motor, latch as well as the ccm but do any of the other doors contain microswitches that would effect the central locking telling the ccm to constantly lock? Even when the car is locked I can still hear it locking and locking.

I've pulled a fuse which seems to have stopped the doors operating as well as stopping the fuel flap opening but the boot must be separate because that's still locking.....

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Mark

Just thought id leave a follow up to the nightmare i had with my car....

After many hours searching through posts on central locking issues, i came across one where somebody had mentioned about the rear washer pipe connection separating above the rear passenger wheel arch.

It just so happened the last time I tried to use my rear washer it didn't work.

I pulled the carpet and side panel back and there it was, washer pipe in 2 pieces right above 3 plugs in the loom.

Plenty of contact cleaner and WD40 later and central locking stops misbehaving and works perfectly.

I still need to address the drivers door issue but can rest easy knowing that my battery wont be flat in the morning due to poorly central locking.

Hope this is of use to someone in the future

Nice work, what's the issue with the drivers door sorry, is it the locking and unlocking thing? Did your solution above change anything? What problems are you left with now?

Sorry I was quite excited to have found a solution so probably skipped over a few things.

With cleaning up the plugs over the rear wheel arch in the boot I have cured the constantly locking itself issue.

The problem which remains is the one where the drivers door doesn't lock / unlock off the fob nor does the drivers door mirror electrics work. On closer inspection there is a broken pin inside the window motor / control unit multi plug. I believe this to be quite a common issue with water getting inside.

As it stands I've replaced 2 window regulators in the drivers door but never bothered with the locking issue simply because it's no real hardship to lock / unlock with the key.

Hopefully very soon I'll have sorted it all out and think I should bite the bullet and replace the door window seal also.

Ah ok, there's people here who've managed to solder in replacement pins and got more life out of the module so it can be done. Mine were fine when I checked but I did post a how to protect them in the tech section. Not sure which pin does what to be honest, pikpilot may have a good idea, it could be that the lack of locking off the fob is dry sticky catches and it's just the mirrors the plug is effecting. Try lube the mech first, may give you some time if you can live with the lack of mirrors adjustment for a while.

Yeah I read a post where someone had replaced one of the pins using a pin from an old usb socket, I was suitably impressed with this fix but I don't have the patience to attempt it, although I can solder I imagine you have to be very accurate with the final location of the new pin.

I have been chatting to a member on here who has been very good and said he will sell me the parts needed.

I did replace the door catch a number of months ago firstly because I thought that could be the issue and secondly because the original was playing up on key but it turned out the catch I bought off eBay much have been off an older model, it does fit and operate as it should but it sounds more servo operated than solenoid operated (if that makes sense).

This beeping the case I've asked for door catch, window motor and door wiring loom. Hopefully this will cover all bases and solve the entire problem, I'll be sure to protect from further water ingress though.

Should cover everything indeed! When you install the loom watch out for setting it up for any rubs, get some extra tape where it passes the window regulator and through the A pillar. If you're fitting a new one may as well help it last as long as possible! Good luck

Thank your for the advice, I intended on trying the old loom to start with and see how that goes but failing that run the new loom and make sure everything is secure and out of the way, and like you say wrap it in tape where it passes through the door and A pillar.

I've been a member on here for a while now and don't come online very often usually just for advice but I'm always humbled with how friendly everyone one is :)

I should probably come online more and get to know everyone, I did join freedom just to show my appreciation if nothing else :)

I've found it a great forum, the best I've ever used, like you say not just for the wealth of knowledge but mainly the lack of idiots (which is unusual for the Internet!) I'm still learning myself and only had my vrs since July but I just try and help where I can and give something back, I certainly get plenty out of it.

I forget how long I've owned mine for now it's certainly six maybe seven years.

To be fair I've had very little trouble with it, I think the biggest job I've had was a clutch after a remap. I find it's the small silly niggly things that are the worst but there's always someone that's had the same or similar problem who are willing to share their own experiences.

Even from the last day or so I've been looking on here I've seen quite a few people who are from my area, I don't do Facebook or any of that crap so maybe this is my new forte :)

That was the main reason for me following up my original post because if it helps just 1 person it's worth the while :)

It's all of help to me, I am in the process of reading up on central locking threads and compiling a good picture of it all in my head. Today my drivers door didn't lock or unlock when I used the key in boot, nor did it lock or unlock from the button on the inside of the drivers door (key in drivers door worked fine). I do not have remote central locking so all key. Rear passenger one has done this a few times but currently working (have had a long running leak battle on that door). I liked the 'servo' sound comment as that is how I would describe mine (2001 Ambient).

I think I have read enough for now and will have to take this bloody door card off now too (leaving only one I haven't had to since getting the car). I am sure I can hear some sort of sound in the door when pressing the central locking button on the door, so will check plug (perhaps corrosion and restricted current) and lube the mech up. I can't check the mirror control as I broke off the little knob for the second time with my knee last week and haven't super glued it back on again yet :D
