A "personal best", 56 litres in the Octy II tank

Does the MK2 FL have a bigger tank? i fill up with 55- 57l  every time with around 30-40 miles left on maxi

Yes I'm aware of that, I said 'at a given temperature'.

55 litres of fuel at 0 C will fill a 55 litre tank.

55 litres of fuel at 40 C will fill a 55 litre tank.

My point is that the temperature (and therefore the volume) of the fuel wouldn't change significantly in the time it takes to leave the pump nozzle and enter the tank, particularly at this time of year. So 55 litres at the pump will be 55 litres in the tank, at least for the couple of minutes it takes to fill up. Yes if the ambient temperature is different to that of the fuel then the fuel will expand or contract in the minutes or hours following the fill up. But not fast enough for you to stand at the pump and put 56 litres in a 55 litre tank. You would need some very warm fuel and a very cold tank!

Then that is a potentially far worse situation.

Let us say that you are in Italy in the middle of Summer, and manage to put 56 litres of fuel in your tank (which should take only 55 litres). You then leave your car in the midday sun and go for a siesta.

You come back a couple of hours later and there is a big pool of diesel around your car, where the 56 litres has turned into 57 litres because of the increased volume due to high temperature.

I remember this being featured on a news report sometime in the late 80s/early 90s. The UK was having unusually hot weather and motoring organisations were warning against brimming the tanks of petrol cars as there had been lots of cases of people leaving cars with brimmed full tanks parked in direct sunlight and returning to find their car sat in a pool of petrol, forced out of the tank breather by expansion. I can't remember why they said cars of that era were supposed to be particularly prone to this problem, I can only think it was due to the introduction of EFI and early charcoal canisters perhaps?
