Losing power

Featured Replies

Hi,

Fabia 2003, 1.2 petrol. AZQ engine

When driving at about 50 to 60 mph the engine seems to lose power momentarily.  It can also happen at lower speeds but less frequent.  New plugs correctly gapped NGK .

The power loss is annoying but it seems to be once I accelerate again it goes away.  Trying to find a pattern as to when it occurs but nothing definite seem to be obvious.  Its never stopped, cut out.  Always starts first thing in all weathers.

Any ideas?

coil pack change fuel filter

  • 2 months later...

Hi,

It sorted itself out once I'd fitted a new fuel filter, or so I thought.  Two weeks later it started again.

I looked at the coils and noted that one of them was dated 2003, and the other two were dated 2012, all three are Bosch.  So I replaced the 2003 coil with a Lucas coil, there are no instructions or data in the Haynes Annual to help me test these so I bit the bullet and took a chance. Once more it appeared to worked for about a week or two then stared missing at about 50 to 60 mph.

So obviously this is a very intermittent problem and difficult to find, and has kept recurring over the last month.  And since I started this post the car has been running very well for periods of time and then the problem recurs occasionally.  Since the car keeps running and has not broken down altogether I have been running it.

I've notice it occurs when I am cursing with my foot only resting on the pedal, i.e. not accelerating or giving any throttle.  It then starts to "hunt" and when I accelerate it goes away.  But it can return in a few minutes or run for the next hour or so ok, then return.  Some days it just dose not happen.  Arghhhh!!!

I have read that these cars have an "electronic" accelerator and resistors control the signal to it. Is this correct?  I was wondering if it could be something associated with this? Once more the info in the Haynes Annual is very scant...

My next step is to take it to have someone run a diagnostic on it.  I prefer to use independent mechanics, but prefer them to be "make" specialist.  Too many small garages claim to have test equipment but its too generic to be of use.  Main dealers are ok but pricy and lets face it the test equipment is only as good as the mech who's using it.  Independents put a lot of cash out buying dedicated equipment and put a lot of effort into learning how to use it properly.  Is there anyone out there who know a garage in the Kilmarnock area of Bonnie Scotland who's equipped to give me a diagnoses?

Try resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery for a minute or two, it sounds like the engine is leaning off too much and one of the cylinders doesn't like it.

I'll give that a try tonight and see what happens over the next wee while.  Will let you know if it works, but unfortunately due to intermittent nature of the problem it may be a week or two before I'm sure fix is working.

Thanks for the reply, appreciated!

Hi Tony,

Yeah try replacing the fuel filter, that could be it. However I am collecting a car (Skoda Fabia 1.2 2006) this Saturday and when we test drove it it kept loosing power as you said. It kept going in to Limping mode. So the garage is replacing the Oil Breather Hose, the oil Breather hose can get clogged up with dirt etc... So that could be your issue. So try replacing that. May fix the issue.

Also if you do replace anything, Make sure you reset the ECU as one person has already said. Also you can do this by yourself if you have VAG COM. However you will need to know the code to delete and reset.

Hope This Helps,

Kangaroo: be sure to test that car thoroughly before you pay and drive off. I doubt that the hose you were asking about in your thread the other day has anything to do with this fault you mention here. There is another 'oil breather hose' that goes between the PCV valve and the inlet manifold, but in your other thread you said it was the one that goes from airbox to rocker cover that you were looking to get replaced???The one from PCV valve to inlet really could be relevant if it is leaking or completely blocked, but I'd still have my doubts.

Oomer: try to find someone local to you with VCDS, and see if that can tell you anything about what is going on.

What is VCDS?  New to Skoda forum but have read about in other posts, so interested to know what it is.

I can only assume its to do with engine code analysis.

Once I've tried to rest ECU by disconnecting battery as suggested by sepulchrave, and if no joy, I'll look for local mechanic with VCDS.

However, I hate being beat by a problem.  If only some one would come up with a reasonably priced diagnostics tool that was not a toy.

Thanks to all for replies!

No, it's 'Joe Public' (i.e. someone from this Forum) you want with VCDS, not a mechanic.  It's exactly what you describe,  a reasonably priced diagnostics tool that isn't a toy. Or just download the Lite version yourself and buy a suitable lead to connect it to your car. Have a browse around the Ross-tech site.

Thanks!

Will look at site.

So, Is there anyone out there in the Killie area of Scotland or close by who has VCDS?
