New Mk1 VRS owner teething niggles

Featured Replies

Hello all, I picked up a rather tidy Mk1 VRS over the weekend, have to say for the money I'm very chuffed.

It's not without a couple of teething niggles though, most I can sort pretty easy and have already ordered bits for.

I have a couple of questions though, firstly can anyone tell me what the connector type is at the antenna end of the radio, so the connector that goes from the antenna base to the cable, that then runs down to the radio. Reason being is I need to change it anyway as its broken and I want to put my DAB radio in there. So just need to get the right adaptors if needs be for the FM side. I'm guessing it might be a Fakra?

Secondly, the headlight beam doesn't adjust and both are stuck on there lowest setting, making it pretty rubbish in the dark currently. Rumour has it, it's the headlight switch that does this? I've already replaced the wheel that controls the headlight beam and the dash lights brightness to no effect, as I got one for penny's off ebay, so next is to try a new headlight switch itself but I'm gonna look into this a bit more on the weekend.

I'm sure there will be plenty more questions, so thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum and happy new car. I can't help with radio I'm afraid I'm clueless. As for your lights adjuster motor in the lights and a failing switch are both reasonably common, so it could be either. If it's both lights it may suggest switch as both motors failing at the same time would be unusual. Oh hang on, you replaced the adjusting switch didn't you? Hmm apparently the motors can be serviced so you could try that as a potentially cheap fix, Suppose it's possible the motors went at different times before you owned the car. I'd be tempted to explore motors as you've renewed the button. I'm sure others will give better advice! Good luck

As YC, no idea about the radio (I normally only use the stacker and the tape deck).

Both light adjusters "stuck down" does suggest motors rather than switch, but I'd check that they have power at the motors even if you've fitted a new switch. Also, if like me you normally run the same loading, you could just set the lights manually?

Yeah don't think I ever moved mine, feel the need even less with Nightbreaker bulbs.

Cheers for the quick replies, yea the headlights need a bit more of a look into, it's possible both headlight motors are screwy just seems unlikely as both are dead and in the same position, but you never know. Rather get it fixed properly, I'm a bit OCD like that, plus it's got a tow bar that I will be using so adjustment on the fly is handy.

You've convinced me that it wants fixing then. There is a DIY guide to fixing them in the sticky notes.

Once fixed change the bulbs also, the light's are not the best

Once the radio is removed you'll need the arial booster which will have the small adaptor for fitting to the back of the radio (most will need the adaptor), that will then connect to the blue wire on the wiring harness that should be supplied in the box with your after market radio.

Already on it! Might even stick some Hella 1000's on the front too while I'm at it :D

H4 for my octy mk1 but all common formats available. Good prices on ebay. Philips version may be a tad better as they burn a little cooler but worth a tenner or so more? I'm not so sure. Been impressed with the nightbreaker+ for the money.

so h4 for mine and philps
