Thermostat problems

Featured Replies

Just wondering have a year 2000 Fabia 1.9tdi 100bhp was taking ages to get warm and when temp gauge halfway was having problems staying there. Changed thermostat today with one from euro car parts and now warms up quicker but only gets to the 1st notch. Now my question could it have a faulty temp sender and also to see if coolent is getting hot enough does the ecu take engine temperature of a different sensor to the gauge. I'm annoyed if I have to swap stat again as costing me again in antifreeze

You'll have to drain the coolant again to change the sensor, try draining it into a clean washing up bowl then pouring it back in again instead of getting annoyed! Obvious really.

Little update faulty thermostat didn't get warm this morning on trip to work. I have never known as many faulty stats to be sold ie opening way to soon

I replaced mine a while ago along with the expansion tank and the coolant temp sender.

After I replaced them I too noticed that the temperature guage was getting upto temp, I also suspected s faulty thermostat.

Once I got around to looking at it I realised it wasn't wasnt the thermostat, it was the seal not seating properly that caused the the coolant to bypass.

Long story short I put the original thermostat and seal back in properly and since then all is well.

Take the thermostat back out and check the seal is ok.

Seal was Def both in they had said it was improved type for the octavia and fabia well my octavia takes about 15 miles to get upto temp only thing different on these stats was the seal as it went around stat so seals on engine inner edge and the plastic pipe also has a small hole in it to let air bleed. Fabia don't even get warm now

The thermostat I replaced was a Circoli one, it came with a seal that fits around the stat like the one you are describing. When I took it back out I could see that it had not sealed properly, the seal was damaged and was no longer usable.

I kept the original genuine thermostat and seal which is a more traditional rounded doughnut type so I put them both back in being extra careful that it was seated right. With the vrs the thermostat housing partly sits behind the altenator bracket making it a tad fiddly. Once it was all back in properly I re-filled the coolant and made sure their was no airlocks.

Job done. Engine now getting upto temperature and staying bang on the 90deg mark.

Just anouther update I'm now out of pocket for antifreeze and euro car parts are not helpful so do not buy circle thermostats from them

You shouldn't have needed to replace the anti-freeze, as was pointed out above all you need to do is drain it into a suitable container. It's quite easy as you have a drain tap at the bottom of the radiator.

Forget about the stat just buy a proper one from Skoda and be done with it, most of the time your better off with genuine parts they maybe more expensive but usually they are better quality.

Just put it down to experience.
