Suspension/Coilovers - what's cheap and good these days?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Been quite a while since I've been on here, but I'm in need of some assistance again.

My other half now has the vRS and the Weitec coilovers have seen better days (they're quite crashy and harsh and the springs are rusting so could do with something completely new). Ideally, I would put the OEM springs back on with new shocks, but I chucked them out years ago.

Question is, what whole suspension setups are available that are a) cheap, b ) comfy and c) decent?

Cheers!

Fair few people through this forum have fitted pro sport, just over 200 but you may need the drop links from a Vito. Damien at DPM will be able to tell you. There's also the FK AK street which I'm tempted with which have had decent reports on the other vag related forums. They're both about the same price. The drop links aren't expensive, the FK have yellow springs which suits me! Will probably wait until a spring snaps or dampers fail. If you want to spend a little more the Koni fst with h and r springs look the best bet at about 380. Been looking around myself. JOM can suffer with leaky dampers I've heard so cheap ain't always cheerful.

Thanks, got any more info on Koni FSTs and springs? Liking the sound of that, sounds like a decent combo for not a lot

It is a great combo and probably the best set up for under 500, let alone on a budget. If I could afford I'd be fitting them now. H and r springs are the only octy specific ones out there so spring rate and ride height is spot on with the right dampers. 20mm drop is perfect if you ask me. I'm on phone so tricky to post link but Google and browsing dpm, awesome gti and europerformance should get you the best prices. Damien and awesome gti are site sponsors and very helpful and approachable.

yeah I've dealt with Damien and Awesome before, the car has an awesome branded forge recirc on it actually. Got the weitecs from Damien.

I can't find anything on Koni FSTs, only FSDs but they're LOT more lol

Just spotted these though: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Koni-STR-T-Performance-Lowering-Suspension-Shock-Absorber-Spring-Kit-1120-1242-/311198724133?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Model%3AOctavia%7CCars+Type%3ARS+1.8+T&hash=item4874e3b025 Anyone run them?

That's them mate sorry I was getting letters jumbled in my head!

I can't find koni FSDs cheap. I have found the Koni kit above and I've found H+R springs and stock bilstein shocks (which is tempting tbh).

Yeah no I meant STRs but I was getting initials mixed up, the eBay link you posted are the ones. The Bilstein dampers are also highly rated and that is another way to do it ie uprated gas dampers with h and r springs, starts to push the price up a little over the Koni which represent excellent value. It's up to you I guess, way I see it us don't be afraid to take a punt on the budget coilies as a lot of people have been surprised by their quality, but they drop a bit more than h and r springs, do you want to go that low? You'll get a great ride out of uprated dampers and springs and if one part fails it's easier replaced out of warranty, but there's the price. The Koni you got the link for there offer a good price and decent quality kit with a sensible drop and ride comfort...tricky decision but if I could afford it I'd go for the easiest option and get the Koni spring and damper kit.

As an alternative to the Bilstein there are Monroe twin gas which are also rated, and for a budget the Al-ko gas shocks are 30% uprated and potentially a good match for h and r springs but it would be a bit of a punt as I've not heard much feedback on them. Their towing equipment is known to be good quality though. Incidentally someone on here has just listed a set of h and rs on ebay and we're for sale in parts section on young mileage. Could be worth snapping them up and getting some nice dampers?

By the way if you do start looking at the Al-ko dampers you'll need the ones listed for sports suspension for lowering springs I'd say.

Hi Damian,

As little as possible tbh, but comfort and reliability are high on the list of priorities. The Bilsteins and springs looks like a good way of getting separate components with better performance than stock (which was rather bouncy).

Cheers,

Tom

In all fairness I got fk ak streets and I havnt slammed the car and they handle great and arnt to crashy or harsh got them from Damian as well spot on bloke even come with the drop links as well

Interesting I've been tempted with those. Yellow springs to match n all!

Cheap and good don't belong in the same sentence. Iv got ap coilovers cost £400. There ok. Build quality is good but ride quality is naff.

It doesn't matter how cheap they are the lower you go the worse the ride is you can pay £150 or £1500 lower you go ride will be affected

The bilstein b12 kit is very good and very popular with mk2 vrs owners.

Sticking with springs and shocks will give you the best ride quality but it's won't get you very low but then again going low is when you start reducing comfort.

Indeed, there isn't a requirement to be low though

Not interested in going low, that wasn't a requirement, so the next question begs: Which springs and shocks all work well together?

KONI SHOCKS AND DEFO H AND R SPRINGS

So are you saying there's no way that Koni shocks and H+R springs for £350 are going to be any good? They're two pretty big names in suspension and I'd expect them to be pretty decent for the price tbh.
